The basket woven using newspaper tubes and decorated by Kanzashi flowers. Hi, guys! The Spring came, so the nature is going to wake up from a hibernation and I’m going to weave the soft pink-emerald color basket. I’ll decorate the bottom using the flower print and the sidewalls using the Kanzashi flowers made from the satin ribbon. I know about this decoration technique since the year ago and like it. Look how is it look like. That tutorial will also be an experiment for me, because I want to know how the basket decorated by Kanzashi flowers will look like. So, let’s begin! We’ll use a newspaper, a scissors, a ruler, a pen or a pencil to cut it into stripes, and a 1.5 mm knitting needle to roll up the tubes. The wallpaper, a cardboard and double-sided scotch tape will be used to make the bottom The pan will be used as a shape. Primer, acrylic varnish, the water, the two tones of color paste, polyethylene film, brushes, dry and wet wipes the jar to stir up the solutions and the latex gloves will be used for staining. We’ll also use the PVA glue, the polymer glue, the water spray to moisten the tubes and the satin ribbon, the buttons, the lighter, the tweezers and the glue gun to make decorations. The stripes must have the different widths and even one edge without text. Some stripes will be 9 cm and some 7 cm wide. 9 cm ones will be used to make the base tubes, that are needed to keep the basket’s shape and will be attached to the bottom and be woven. They look the same as the weaving tubes, just more durable. Now I’ll show how to roll up the tubes, the method is the same for the both sizes. Put the knitting needle on the corner with text at an acute angle and roll it tightly on it. Use the both hands. Pull it out in the end, pour the glue on the corner, roll it up and hold a bit to prevent unsticking. Let them dry for 24 hours. Now let’s stain the tubes. I want them to be soft pink and soft emerald colored. The newspaper that I’m using has the soft pink tone itself, so these tubes will not be stained. I’ll show you how to stain the white tubes using the emerald color. To make the soft pink tubes, use the red color paste. Make the primer with water solution in 1:1 ratio, add the one tea spoon of the varnish, stir it up and pour a drop of the color paste. That’s the color we got, but it’ll be brighter after drying up the tubes. You can test it before staining all the tubes. Stain the trial tube and dry it up. This tube was stained a moment ago and that was earlier, it is more bright when dry. These tones are appropriate for me, so I’ll stain all the tubes. Stain the tubes rolling them side to side on the table from the one side, then from the opposite. Smear it properly to prevent blots. Don’t forget to wash the brushes and to wipe the film before changing the color. After staining let the tubes to dry using the two tubes as a rack for the better ventilation and drying. Left them for an hour. Then, roll them up into the film, to prevent their full drying up. But the edges, that’ll be the connection points have to be dry, so they have to be outside. They can be stored like that for no longer than 24 hours. But the pink base tubes have to be fully dried for 24 hours. Now, let’s make the bottom. It’ll consist of two attached surfaces with the base tubes stuck inside. Take the two cardboards and the piece of the wallpaper. Put the pan on the cardboard and outline the bottom using the pen. And also put the pan on the wallpaper’s fragment that you want to use and outline it by the pencil to be able to erase it then. Cut it with the 1 cm indent, to left the tongues for glue. This how it’ll look like. Cut the indent into tongues, with the 2 mm distance between the line and the corner. Do the same with the both circles. Also cut the the cardboards with the 1 mm indent inside, to make them fit inside the wallpapers. Well done. Now bend the tongues of the wallpaper and glue the cardboard afterwards. Pour the polymer glue on the wallpaper and smear it fast, because it’s quick-drying, then press the cardboard tightly on the all sides. Do the same with the second one. Then pour the glue on the edge of the cardboard, smear it and stick with the wallpaper. Start to attach the base tubes afterwards. I calculated that 40 base tubes are needed and marked out their places. Now, I’ll show you how to do it. Measure the perimeter of the pot, I’ve got 76 cm in the middle and 68 cm near the bottom. The distance between the tubes has to be 1.5 – 2 cm from each other. If I’ll use 40 base tubes, it’ll be 1.7 cm on the bottom and 1.9 cm in the middle, that is appropriate. We don’t need the too long tubes, so the base tubes will be cut in a half and attached to the cardboard using the double-sided scotch tape. Cut the 2 cm tape, put it on the line, narrow down the tube’s edge, then put and press it tightly. Do the same with the others. Afterwards, pour the polymer glue and smear it properly. Especially on the tubes edges. Do it quick, because the glue dries fast, as I said before. Then put the second part of the bottom on the center and press it tightly. Well done. Put the pan with something heavy inside on top and let it dry for one night. After the full drying up, we can start to weave. But the base tubes have to be bent previously. Moisten them on the corner to prevent their breaking. Cover the tubes with a film and spray the water on the corner and let them dry for 5 minutes. Start to bend from the reserve tube, the last tube will be bent instead of it in the end. Bend it to the left under the neighbor tube, and then to the up. Hold the bent tubes. Do the same till the end of the round. Pull out the reserve tube in the end and insert the last one instead. Weave the sidewalls using the Straight Rope method by 2 tubes. Glue them to the base tubes from the inside. One tune behind the one base tube and the other one behind the neighbor base tube. Start to weave counter-clockwise. Watch over the tubes to be moisturised and the base tubes to be vertical. Bend the left tube on the 1st one, behind the 2nd one. On the 1st one, behind the 2nd one. Pull them immediately to tighten the weaving. I bent the base tubes to the left and start to weave to the right to make the symmetrical pattern, that make the bottom edge hidden. Then the tube ended, cut the edge at an acute angle, 10 mm from the base tube, narrow it down, insert the next tube by the wide edge and continue on weaving. It will hide the connection point. The 3rd round row have to be finished because the color will be changed. This tube will be inserted behind this base tube, there we started. And the previous one behind this. The edges will be hidden in the weaving. Cut the edges at 7 mm distance from the base tubes and expand the gap to insert the tube inside. Here and there. And insert the edges inside. The round row is finished. The next round row will we woven using the Triple Straight Rope method using the emerald color tubes. They were also glued behind the base tubes Bend the left tube on the 1st and 2nd and behind the 3rd one. Do the same with the others. That method will make the weaving more volumable. Then you reach the base tube there started, bend the right tube behind the 3rd base tube and put it inside. Then the middle one, also behind the 3rd one. And left one in the end. Place it in the texture. Cut it at an acute angle from the inside and glue to the tube to make hidden. Now the texture looks good from the inside. And continue on weaving Straight Rope. Weave several round rows. It left to weave only 4 round rows, but some base tubes are not long enough, therefore make them longer, while attaching to the bottom. Now they”ll be cut and the new ones will be glued instead. Insert the tube from the internal side, pour a drop of PVA glue and let it dry. But if the tube’s edge is wide enough, you can just insert the edge inside it. It would also be durable that way. I’ve weaved 8 round rows and finished the weaving the same way, as at the beginning, after weaving the 3rd round row. The next one will be weaved by Triple Straight Rope by an emerald tubes. Using this method, the new tubes will be attached a bit ahead comparing to a just Straight Rope. Cut at 20 mm to the right of the base tube. Insert and keep on weaving. Weave the last 3 round rows by the Straight Rope. After 2 round rows, we have to change the base tubes to the bending tubes to hide the connection points, during the 3rd round row weaving. We’ll attach 2 tubes instead of 1. Use the weaving tubes. Do it in the same way as with the base tubes. Cut and glue it from the inside. All the tubes attached and now we can weave the 3rd round row. The last step is bending. Moisten them to prevent breaking. Bend from the right to the left. Take the pair of the base tubes and bend them behind the next 2 pairs. That way. Use the knitting needle to make the bending look rounded. Expand the gaps under the first 2 pairs because the last ones will be inserted there. Here we came to an end and the 2 pairs left. Insert the right one to the right hole and the left to the left one. Pull it. The last hole left, so insert the last pair inside it. The first stage of the bending was finished. correct the bending points to make them look proper. This is how it looks from top and from the inside. The next stage is to insert the tubes inside the weaving. We’ll insert the pair after the 2 pairs on the left. Right inside the gap under the 2nd one. We reserved the hole for the last pair. The bending here is easy. The main thing is to insert them inside, because then, they could be cut under the braid. Keep on weaving. If the tube is too short, pour the polymer glue, to prevent pulling out. Attach it to the tubes. Pull out the reserve pair in the end and insert the last pair instead. The 1st and the 2nd one. Press it afterwards to make the braid looks good. Now we’ll pour the PVA glue on the edges to prevent their pulling out. I also pour it outside. It left 1.5 hours since the gluing and I’ll cut the edges, before it’s complete drying up. As close to the weaving as possible to make them hidden. Let’s stain the basket. The 1st layer is the primer to make it solid and the 2nd is the acrylic varnish. The primer consist of the varnish with water solution in 1:1 ratio. Pour the water, the varnish and mix them. Take the brush with artificial bristles. and start to primer from the inside. Lay the film on the bottom and primer little by little. After the 12 hours of drying the basket became solid. Now varnish to make it gloss and beautiful. Smear it properly. I also smear it by the little brush afterwards to prevent the blots on the texture. If the the bottom’s wallpaper made from paper, it also requires to be varnished. I used the vinyl waterproof wallpaper, so I don’t need it. Let it dry for 12 hours. Start to decorate afterwards. I’ve made 8 flowers, 4 each type and now will attach them alternating. The tutorials to make the flowers are linked in the description. Let’s attach the flowers. Pour and smear the polymer glue on the backside of the flower. Make the markings and attach the flowers at the equal distance. Press it tightly. This is what we got and now the basket is finished. The basket is completed and looks pretty and the flowers are gorgeous. This is how the bottom looks and from the outside. The flowers are adding the beauty and the spring mood. I’m sure that if you were weaving with me your basket is also appeared to be beautiful and spring. I wish you the good sunny mood, guys!
