Bullet Journal 101: Introduction

Bullet Journal 101: Introduction

hi everyone its Kara here from boho berry and I am here today on this fabulous Monday with a brand new video for you and actually this video is going to be turned into a series I get so many questions day in and day out from people all over the world that are looking to get started with bullet journaling they’re not really sure where to start where to begin so I thought I would create this series for you and originally I was just going to do one big video one blog post over on my blog kind of what the getting started guide but as I started throwing everything together I realized that I really had so much information to cover but I wanted to turn this into a series for you all so every Monday during the month of September I’m going to be coming to you with a brand new part in this series which I’m calling bullet journal 101 and bullet journaling is a really simple method of getting yourself organized especially when you break it down to its bare bones and and the original concept but I think a lot of people come to the bullet journaling world from seeing all these images on Pinterest and on Instagram of these super artsy and decorated bullet journals and then they’re really not sure where to start so I wanted to create this series to kind of give everyone an idea of where you can start what are the basics of bullet journaling where did this idea come from and how you can ultimately make it your own as well so I want to welcome you to this course the way this series is going to work is every Monday during the month of September I’m going to post a brand new video along with a companion blog post of around boho very calm and each video is going to center around a specific topic so the topics are as follows week 1 we are going to focus on what exactly is a bullet journal and the biggest thing I like to tell people is you want to go straight to the source you want to go straight to bullet journal calm for that bare bones and really get the basics down with your new bullet journal and so in that what is a bullet journal video we’re going to be covering things like what actually is a bullet journal why you would want to choose an analog planner type system like the bullet journal over digital planners and a general overview of the system itself in week two we’re actually going to cover pre-planning and I know that kind of sounds silly to pre-plan what you’re going to put in your planner I mean that’s what your planner is for right but I think it’s a good idea to start off with a little brainstorming trying to figure out what you want your system to do for you and making sure that you’re starting simple and kind of covering a little bit of what supplies you’re going to need versus what you don’t need in Week three we’re going to cover all of the basics of the bullet journal system so we’re going to cover all the individual parts that make up a bullet journal we’re going to cover how they all work together and I’m also going to give you some helpful resources when you’re first starting out and then finally in our fourth week we’re going to talk about making your bullet journal your own and within making it your own we’re going to talk about different bullet journal hacks and upgrades and kind of evolutions to the system that have come up since the bullet journal began about three years ago we’re going to talk about different collection ideas we’re going to talk about your review process how you can review how things are going in your bullet journal etc and we’re going to talk about things like dealing with overwhelm when life gets a little hectic and and how to deal with those sorts of things in your bullet journal for those of you that don’t know me I’m Kara and I’m a blogger and I blog over at vocal Barry comm I also have this YouTube channel that you landed on here and I write and blog about bullet journaling organization personal development and a little backstory about me when it comes to bullet journaling I actually started bullet journaling in September of 2014 and it was kind of funny because I really didn’t stick with it I don’t think I was at a place in my life where I really needed that level of organization and I kind of dropped off and didn’t use it after a couple of weeks and I’ve always been one of those girls that’s hopped around from planner system to planner system I had Franklin cubbies I had Erin Condren I had all these different planners anything from my local office supply store that looked cute and I would always start to use it and get really excited and then I would just fall off for one reason or another it wouldn’t work for me anymore I would need a different layout so I would switch it up and then the bullet journal came along again I said I used it for just a couple of weeks back in 2014 and I really don’t think I needed that level of organization quite yet but if you fast forward almost a year later I kind of stumbled across the bullet journal system again I had just started my blog I had an Etsy business that I was trying to grow as well and I really needed a way to kind of organize all these different aspects of my life I was working full time on the side as well at the time so I needed something where I could wrangle all these different aspects of my life into one place and I stumbled across the bullet journal again and what’s great is by that time the bullet journal website had been redesigned and updated and there were lots of new inspirations out there there were people like Kim over a tiny ray of sunshine and Dee over a decade 30 who are constantly evolving and revolutionising the system itself so I think it was finally at a place where it was able to click into my brain and I just I was hooked immediately I fell in love with it and then I started sharing my my progress and sharing what I was doing within my bullet journal on places like Instagram and on my blog and then I kind of developed this following and it grew into what you all know is boho berry today and I have been getting requests to do a getting started video or a getting started post for a very very long time and I didn’t do that for a couple of reasons one is I really didn’t consider myself an expert when it came to bullet journaling and I know I know that sounds silly because so so many people do look up to me as a resource and inspiration in the bullet journal community but I just I wanted to have a little more experience under my belt before I started doling out advice on getting started and then the other reason is I truly believe that the best way to get started is to go straight to the source which is bullet journal com I think writer Carol does a fabulous job of explaining the system and really kind of giving you the idea of the bare-bones and the basic so that you can start out nice and simple and then add on or subtract things that you do or don’t need as you go so if you’re one of those people that has reached out to me in the past about how to get started chances are I’ve just pointed you straight over to the bullet journal com website however I get so many requests still day in and day out and I thought that I would try my hardest here to give you all a good overview and give you some ideas tips and tricks for getting started from my own personal perspective so I really hope that this course becomes kind of a resource within the community for anyone looking to get started or even for those seasoned bullet journalists of you out there that really just want a little more in-depth guidance I look forward to seeing you every Monday in September right here on this channel and if you have any questions comments anything along the way please please please feel free to drop those in the comment section below I’m still kind of tweaking and piecing together the course as we speak right now so there’s still time if you have questions if you have something you need answered absolutely drop those in the comments section below and I will do my very best to make sure that I cover everything I can for you all in this course alright thank you so much for watching everyone I look forward to seeing you every Monday and I’ll be back on Friday with one of my regularly scheduled videos see you then bye you

  2. You're so inspirational πŸ™‚ I have recently started with my bullet journal and i have so much to catch on. I have started last Wednesday and it made me so excited.. 4. hey honey lovely to see your smile again i was wondering if we could have a #tag for the course and anything that has been created to help others? thanks for your inspiration

  5. I'm definitely going to watch! I have tried to start a bujo, but I think I'm making it harder than it is. I don't need mile long to do lists and the kitchen sink in itπŸ˜†. I'm putting way too much on one day and repeating my same mistakes. So I'm ready for class in Sept.πŸ˜ƒπŸŽπŸ““βœοΈπŸ–Š

  6. Hi.. I am so grateful that you finally decided to teach us how to bullet journal.. I get really inspired by your videos..

  7. I will be using my bullet journal for school. So maybe you can put some tips in there for people who will be using the bullet journal for single subject topics? (For example: I'm taking a Wills and Trusts class and a Corporations class so I'll be splitting my BuJo in half, putting class notes, test prep, reading notes, upcoming assignments etc. in there)

  8. I am glad you're doing this series! I've been journaling since May but have always wanted a Bullet Journal 101. Many pins and posts have clips of it but not from front to back cover. Yay!! You are one of my favorites YouTubers.

  9. What a good initiative! Love that! How long can we fill in a bullet journal? (I mean the time to keep writing down) More than a year? Hope my question is clear enough…

  10. Thank you so much! Bullet Journal is a new system for me, so I'm interested in everything.

  11. Hi Kara, I find it difficult to figure out what to do with task that I know I have to get done, but don't have a specific date or timeline for it. Where do I leave those? They end up on my mothly log on a post-it but it doesn't work out as well as I hoped. Can you explain how you handle that?. Thanks πŸ’•

  12. I'm officially starting my BuJo on Thursday – the 1st! SO this is PERFECT timing for me! I can't wait to learn and try things out to see what works for me! πŸ™‚

  13. I am so excited for this! Watching your videos inspired me to start my BuJo this month, and I can't wait to learn and try out new things. Thanks for putting this together!

  15. I actually checked out the Bullet Journal website and found it really overwhelming and confusing, which is why I never picked it up. It wasn't until I found your blog and youtube channel that it all made a lot more sense and I decided to try it out =]

  16. I started mine in may but you have been a great inspiration and I love that you try the different layouts. I try them all too to see if any fit me better. keep up the great work.

  17. First of all… I LOVE how your hair is growing out! Thanks for finally doing this! I have been following your channel this whole year and always thinking "ok, I'll start next month" and bow that I do have stuff filing my life enough to have a real need for a BuJo.. This comes in perfect timing! Can't wait!

  18. This is absolutely perfect timing for me-I ordered my Leuchtturm last evening, and it should be here by Wednesday. I have done the same thing as you with the bouncing around from planner to planner, spending a lot of money. I think I've finally reached the point where I can do this. Thank you so much for this series.

  19. Yay! I'm very excited for this. This is something I really want to try so this will be perfect for me. Thank you, Kara! My goal is to be ready and prepared to start as soon as I can get my hands on the journal I've been eyeballing. Hopefully I'll be able to make some money soon! lol

  20. hey i am from argentina and i would like to know if you could give us some advice about goals setting. because i do not know were to start and i think is something that would improve my life

  21. From my heart, I just want to thank you, thank you, thank you for introducing me to the Bullet Journal (April of this year). I don't even remember how I found you on YouTube, but I watched you and I was hooked! It made total sense!!! Since June, I started wandering since I'm a planner enthusiast and spent way too much money on different planners and systems. I pulled out my sample BuJo (cheapy Wal-Mart notebook) and started again! I actually missed it! I do have a Leuchtturm, but I find I'm much more comfortable in my cheapy notebook and free to create vs. my Leuchtturm. I love my Leuchtturm, but I think I figured out I really like the softcover. Sorry! Rabbit trail. Thanks again for everything you do for the planner community!!!!! P.S. Love your blouse and your hair is too cute!! Many blessings!!!!!!!!!

  22. I have just lately (that means in the last few days) discovered bullet journal idea – I really woudl like to give it a go and am so happy that you will provide us with some information – please tell me are you going to cover what kind of notebook we should buy hard/soft cover or even number of pages is that important at all????

  23. Wonderful! My mom just got started with a bujo and I think this will be a great resource as she makes it her own.

  24. this is great! I'm excited. I do my own style of bullet journaling where add weekly to do lists in my sketchbook…and then I have a planner at home that I add events to

  25. I've been wanting to start a bullet journal but I literally have nothing to plan cause I'm never busy/have anything to do.

  26. I am new to bullet journaling and I am excited for this series. I have a book blog and other social medias like instagram and twitter that I am wanting to try to start planning out my posts so I am excited to learn and hopefully find way that will work for me.

  27. Thanks so much for the series, I'm new to bullet journaling feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the YouTube videos. I stumbled upon your channel….immediately liked your spirit and the simplicity of your videos. Thanks I will surely follow your series.

  28. That's perfect 😍 I've started bullet journaling last month, with a tiny little book, and this month I want to do this serious, so the other book was just for practice. I know I will enjoy these videos because there is so much to learn while already have started and continuing just to improve my bullet journal. I'm sooooo exited πŸ™Š

  29. Hi Kara!
I was wondering if you could explain the different challenges you host (plan with me, rock your handwriting) and how to implement them into one's BuJo. Thanks!!

  30. I just wanna say thank you for all your effort sharing your experience with the bullet journal system with your followers in the best way you can. I'm particularly struggling with the pre planning part so I hope this series really helps me to throw perfectionism out the window and finally start my system hahah. You're doing an amazing job, Kara! Kisses from Brazil <3

  31. I've been bujoing for about a year. This series seems like a great refresher and motivater. Thanks for having this idea.

  32. Hi! I really appreciate the idea of making this series πŸ™‚ I'm looking forward to next Monday to watch the next video! I'd like you to explain how the 'Level 10 Life' system works and specifically how often you have to make a new Level 10 Life, I mean, do you have to complete the 10 levels of your previous Level 10 Life before starting a new Level 10 Life? Thanks! πŸ™‚

  33. So excited about this series! One of my subscribers suggested it to me and I can't wait to learn more about your process. Also worth noting, your shirt is fabulous and looks amazing on you.

  34. Totally random question. Those flowers on your desk (next to your clock) wouldn't by chance be from "Dana's Paper Flowers", would they?

  35. I've been subbed for a few months now and this is the first time I've actually seen you in your videos. I'm used to just your voice, and I didn't expect you to have what appear to be quarter/half arm sleeves. I absolutely LOVE you that much more now. You're so sweet and I love your style and helpful informationπŸ’™

  36. Kara – can't wait to watch your series. I custom ordered a planner and a blank notebook from personal-planner.com in the UK. It should arrive just in time for your courses. I'm totally looking forward to being more organized at home and work. PS. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE your desk!! Love from PA.

  37. Supposed to take any notebook and put it to use. How about pocket notebooks in a tn. This seems the size that's most portable and once filled. Migrate over and move one.

  38. Do you know of anyone who is a writer/author who does bullet journaling? I would love to see how they deal with writing and such.

  39. Hey! I would like to learn a bit about bullet journaling for study/school/students etc…. If you have any tips about time management and keeping track of assignments please put them in!!

  40. hi Kera I have one BIG request. please make a video on how university student can use Bujo, I want your tips. will really appreciate it

  41. I'm really looking forward to this series, even though I'm an avid bullet journalist! There are still some aspects of the process that I feel I could use more effectively if I understood them better, and it's always great to see how you and others use the system. Yay!!!

  42. In looking forward to hearing your perspective. I have found the bullet journal to be very useful. However with my family's schedule and my brain I have a hard time keeping up with it. So I have an Erin Condren, but find myself using a lot of Bullet Journal ways. Will you have suggestions on how to use the bullet journal system in other planners? I even did a tip in to make an index. I use the hourly set up because that's what works best for my family.

  43. Kara, I will be 70 years old next March and was trained on the Franklin Covey System many years ago. I love that you are doing this training for us because I like the bullet journal idea and don't really know how to start. I bought a small journal from Target and am transferring the rest of my year from Erin Condren…this was my 2nd year of EC. Thank you so much! Blessings…

  44. I'm really looking forward to seeing your pre-planning video. I think that's what I struggled with starting the most because I wasn't sure how to pick what to put in my bullet journal. I'm assuming that's where a lot of other people get stuck as well.

  45. Looking forward to this series. I have been playing with a bujo for about 2 1/2 months & now I'm getting ready to to set up a new one that will start Oct. This is perfect timing for me.

  46. Can't wait for the serious. Been wanting to BJ but I need long term planning and I can't figure out how to incorporate that effectively in a bullet journal

  47. Looking forward to this series so much! I ordered some dot grid journals and i am so excited to get started! 😊

  48. Hello! I've just finished watching your video as it was in my suggested video feed and this is a fantastic idea πŸ™‚ I've been bullet journaling since the first week of July and already I've run into a few stalls but I love the concept so much I won't be giving up on it! If you'd like to connect, feel free to check out my vids but regardless, I'm a new subscriber and supporter! Your friend, Erin

  49. I think this series is a great idea. I also discovered bullet journaling from an artsy post, and it shows in my first few daily's how hard I tried to make them pretty…when I really just wanted something simple.

I hope people who are new to bullet journaling see this series, and don't make the same mistake I did πŸ™‚

  50. I was so happy to find your blog last night when doing some research on bullet journaling and I'm so happy I did! Thank you for this series, you have a new subscriber! πŸ™‚

  51. I just bought my first Moleskine journal to start my first bullet journal!! Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I love the idea of getting my life together this way πŸ™‚

  52. I am so brand new to bullet journaling that watching this video, it has opened up a door to a whole other world out there, that I was not aware of. I am so intrigued with bullet journaling that I am ready to give it a try and learn as much as I can about this new place I have discovered. I have to admit, I am a bit weary about starting because, seeing your journals, I just love how much color they have, and the creativing that goes into it, I know that mine will not look as good, so I may borrow a few of your writings and doodles just to add a little pop to mine. πŸ™‚ Hope that's okay. But thank you for posting this video and the rest, I feel confident in my journey and I am glad that it is starting with this video.

  53. I am so in love with your desk!! New to bullet journaling. I've been scoping Youtube and IG for ideas before my notebook comes in the mail! Perfect timing as I'm hoping to start a new job as well! <3

  54. Thank you for this informative video. I'm thinking of starting my Bullet Journal this November, this is the best video series for beginners

  55. OH where have you been all my life, I suffer with Dyslexia, and my friend introduced me to Boho Berry and im hooked my life will be so much easier and less cluttered thank you πŸ™‚

  56. I absolutely love this channel! I recently just started with bullet journaling and this channel has helped me so much!

  57. I just came across the notion that this was a big thing now? Not really sure why people keep saying some guy invented this a few years ago? I've been doing this since like 1st grade! I have old ones pretty much JUST like these in spice girls journals from like 1996. Our teacher used to have the whole class do this. Of course the names, symbols and keys were a little different but it was the same thing. I give the guy credit for mainstreaming it or giving people a guide but he didn't invent this lol anyways I love the channel. Just kind of annoying when people get credit for "inventing" things that others have done for years. I think "invented" is a term used to freely

  58. I want to start bullet journaling for many reasons not the least of which is to deal with my severe bipolar disorder and try to maintain my mental well-being. Thanks for your series in advance. (I haven't got to watch it all yet.). I looked on Pinterest and other YouTube videos and immediately felt out of my league. I hope to enjoy this style of journaling and eventually marry it to a Traveler's Notebook system.

  59. Thank you very much! its helped me, get started. I always loved journaling and planner but like you said there are so much idea out there and so many different layouts which I found overwhelming. πŸ™‚

  60. Totally need this in my merry go 'round life! Obsessive & and ADHDx are an interesting combo but both extremely hard to manage effectively. Especially with 3 son's 11, 9 & 7!

I need all the help and advice I can get. I totally suck at taking notes though.

  61. I know this isnt about Journaling but your tattoos are amazing and I'm new to your channel but I love you ok bye~

  62. Hi! I'm just getting started with BuJo, I know, late to the game. Your videos are so helpful. The way you break it all down makes it easy to get started. BTW I love your desk!! Where did you find it?
