LANAYA: BONNIE STRICKLAND TOLD ME IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE SHE RECEIVED A NEWSPAPER FROM RANKIN COUNTY NEWS. HOWEVER IN THE RECENT PUBLICATION ON APRIL THIRD A SECTION OF THE PAPER CAUGHT HER EYE. LANAYA IN THE DEAR ANN SECTION – WHICH IS AN OPINION’S COLUMN – THREE PEOPLE WROTE ABOUT HOW QUOTE “BLACKS” HAVE SCARED PEOPLE AWAY FROM NEIGHBORHOODS IN RANKIN COUNTY. ANOTHER MENTIONS HOW JACKSON STAARTED TO GO DOWN HILL WHEN QUOTE “THE BLACKS TOOK OVER.” STRICKLAND SAYS SHE UNDERSTANDS FREEDOM OF SPEECH BUT THERE SHOULD BE A LINE. SPEAKER: BONNIE STRICKLAND “I think people should be careful about their readers. I would think they would want everybody to feel like they can read the paper and appreciate the things that that are in there. I’m not saying they should feel like censored, you know there is freedom of speech, but you know having consideration towards others, I think is what’s really important.” LANAYA: I SPOKE TO THE EDITOR OF RANKIN NEW AND HE SAID IN PART: “THESE ARE JUST OPINIONS THAT WRITERS WRITE IN…IT’S BOTH BLACK AND WHITE THAT WRITE IN… WE DON’T BELIEVE IN RACISM, BUT THE ARTICLE IS WHAT PEOPLE SAY AND FEEL… THEY CAN WRITE BACK HERE TO RESPOND.” LANAYA: COMING UP AT 6 HEAR FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND WHAT THEY THINK OF THE OPINION PIECES.
