Creating a Question and Answer Community with Vanilla Forums

Creating a Question and Answer Community with Vanilla Forums

Today we will talk about the Q&A add-on or questions and answers. So how does it
work? The first thing you going to do is turn it on. So you just find Q&A in your browse add-on section, and click
enable. As you can see here it’s highlighted in yellow so now it’s ready to go. But with Q&A most what we need to show you is going to be on the front end. So let’s
cover how it works. First of all, one of the things you have an option is to drop down for new discussion. You can now have “ask a question”.If
you’d like to have to “ask a question” to be the default, contact support and they can make that change for you so that your community is mostly a
question-and-answer community as opposed to new discussion community. The other thing that you’ll notice is
that there is now an unanswered category in your community so by clicking that you’ll see all the
questions that have been asked without an answer. Now we will move to a sample questions. In this case we have this question asked by Barry and I’m logged in as the administrator to show you some of the different features But also keep in mind if Barry
was logged in he would also have the opportunity to
select if the answers that have been given to him were helpful. So first off, let’s start with this new menu item that gets added the gear for
question answers for the administrator when a a discussion is created, and it should be a question you can change that by just clicking
Q & A on the gear and move it to question right now this
is a question but if it was a discussion you could move it to be a question which then at these options here that
you see two decide if the answers correct. Now when Barry logs in or if he doesn’t log
in, the administrator sees a question and has a seen an answer that is correct
he just clicks yes and what happens is that question gets marked as the correct answer. Now some things that we should mention is a question can have multiple best
answers it can be changed by the administrator at any time. So for example, if I decided, this was in fact not the right answer I could change it to “no” or don’t know
and let it be chosen by Barry the original
question asker As well, if a question has been decided not to be correct we can click No and it will be seen as a rejected
answer. Now as you see here there’s colors and
there’s icons now this is not how it works out of the box. There are
customizations you can do and this is the customization I did to
make the Q & A stand out a bit more. A way that you
do that, it’s just simple CSS. That’s all it takes so we can just open something like Firebug
here or you can use your chrome dev tools
whatever you feel most comfortable with and as you can see
here basically I’m what you want to look for is to do for accepted answers: so it’s Q&A item accepted and then all I
did is I added some CSS to make a change the color an
I did the same thing for rejected as you can see here Q&A item
rejected and you’re able to you know change the
background color and add an image as well. As you see you can have a lot of fun with this. Remember you can have multiple
correct answers as well so I’m it makes it for a very great addition to any community where you will have lots of questions and allow people to pick answers. Answers
as well gets connected to badges. So when a user answers a lot of questions he can get points towards getting a
badge, which is part of our reputation system
we have covered in an earlier video. So hopefully found this video
interesting about Q &A if you’re a hosted Vanilla customer and
you require support you may contact us at vanillaforums.com/help and if you’d like to know about future
videos make sure you subscribe and finally if you’re not currently a Vanilla Forums customer and you’d like to learn more you can
