Denise Ho – Oslo Freedom Forum : “Under the umbrella : Creative dissent in Hong Kong”| HOCC

While countries were rolling out their red carpets
for the China dream
The Umbrella Movement in 2014 則是香港人發起的
proved to be a defiant move
from the people of Hong Kong.
In a city where the majority of the population
has always been so politically indifferent
Why were these young students
courageously standing up to this giant machine
one that so many were fearful of?
Walking down the occupied streets of Harcourt Road
I remember seeing all these magnificent expressions
of thought and creativity
something that I had never seen in my city.
Graffiti, sculptures, art installations, small patches of farming
our own posted mosaic version of the Lennon Wall
and even a temporary study hall.
And let’s not forget the 28-meter banner of 「我要真普選」 我們要求真正的全民普選
“We want Real Universal Suffrage”
that hung on for an unforgettable morning on the iconic Lion Rock Mountain.
As a Hong Kong born singer-songwriter
a daughter of an immigrant family
who spent her teenage years in Montreal
and also the first female singer to have come out openly in Hong Kong
I had always felt out of place in this city.
As a celebrity
I was told to “stay neutral”
and not get involved in politics.
Although I had earned fans along the way
received awards recognizing my efforts
there were still clearly something missing.
It was only until this moment
among the aspiring crowds of the Umbrella movement
that I finally felt
a real sense of belonging to this place
where I have always called “Home”.
Hong Kong has always been a city focused on wealth and prosperity
seldom on politics and human rights.
Because, in so many ways, we never had to.
As a British colony
we became the financial hub of Asia
establishing pillars of free speech and human rights
We became the poster boy of East meets West.
In 1984, a joint declaration was signed
announcing the return of Hong Kong back to China
at the same time introducing the one country two systems model
which promised Hong Kong its freedom and autonomy for 50 years.
Yet this was never meant to be the case.
Since the return
the Hong Kong government has been eroding our democratic systems
in place for centuries
media freedom has declined rapidly
activists now prosecuted for peaceful assembly.
Laws are now unjustifiably altered
in favour of the Beijing government.
For decades we were promised universal suffrage
the Communist government has done everything in his power
to prevent this from happening.
But where there is despair
there is resistance.
When the Hong Kong as we knew it 開始在我們眼前消失
began disappearing before our eyes
a young and creative force swept across the city.
Hundreds and thousands of us took to the streets.
Mothers, fathers, scholars and artists
an entire generation of youth poured onto the streets
courageously and selflessly
standing up to this injustice.
To an authoritarian government
dissent and protests are a major threat.
a day that I would never forget
the Hong Kong government fired 87 tear gas bombs
onto peaceful protesters.
Hong Kong people smart and flexible as we are
grabbed umbrellas, as tools of defense, to block off the chemicals.
With this one act
our movement became a worldwide phenomenon.
The “Umbrella” Movement ignited creative activism in Hong Kong.
For the first time in our dictated history
we have finally come to our own definition of who we are
We are neither Chinese nor British.
We are HONGKONGERS.
Unfortunately, after 79 days of occupation
the Umbrella Movement died off.
140 protesters were arrested for this civil disobedience
myself included.
Fear of political reprisal has become predominant
among brands and businesses.
People are intimidated by an intolerant government
who suppresses opinions in remorseless and uncivilized ways.
Those who have spoken out are now prosecuted
such as young student leaders
Joshua Wong, Alex Chow, Nathan law
Edward Leung and “The Umbrella Nine”.
Dozens of other lesser known names
are now sentenced for up to 8 years.
In these gloomy days, young people are checking out.
Families are once again leaving their home city
in a frantic search of a better home.
As a public figure, creator
and most of all someone who emigrated and returned
the question I ask myself now is: 我作為名人可以做甚麼?
What can I do as a celebrity
How do I convince this once brutally awakened, “chosen” generation
that there is still hope in our own actions?
After my involvement in the Umbrella Movement
I was banned from China.
All my songs and social media accounts were taken down 所有商業活動都停止了
All commercial work has ceased.
Brands, sometimes even other celebrities
kept their distance, in fear of being associated with me.
Interestingly, it was because of this loss of the China market
because I could no longer rely on this easy revenue
that I became grounded to reality.
As I was forced out from my glamourous world
I gained a new perspective of what I could actually accomplish.
I was brought into a new and vibrant world.
In 2016, when sponsors avoided me 而避開我
for my political outspokenness
I instead launched a campaign
to crowd-sponsor my concert
gathering support from 300 local businesses
with a total of 50000 tickets sold out within hours.
Later on, with my amazing team
I built my own system
I launched my own record label
signing young and budding artists
and also improvised local tours in different districts of Hong Kong.
We sang on trams and underground live houses on sidewalks
and even in local shops.
Last year, we self funded and organised a six-day music festival
which united and gathered 100 local businesses and music acts.
By creating socially innovative art, music, and events
by breaking rules and reinventing the game
I want to pass on this message
to the younger generations 「創造自己的可能性
“Create your own possibilities 即使世界與你為敵」
even when all odds seem to be against you.”
tyrants are afraid of the people.
They have seen the power of 見識到和平有序的運動
organized peaceful movements 的力量
time and time again.
And it threatens them.
Fear grows in spaces when we feel alone
judged and cut off 重點是
to not get discouraged and intimidated by the bigger picture
but rather to look within and around ourselves.
to find people with similar values
and identify the possibilities
that exists in our own spaces.
By focusing on our everyday lives
on our skills and passions
we can and will reignite our courage.
Whether you are a student, a scientist, a teacher or doctor,
it doesn’t matter.
Do your best in what you do best.
Live the life that you envision for generations to come.
When the system does not provide for us 我們就自己來
we take things in our own hands.
Our fate is what we make of it.
By reconnecting with ourselves
we will reconnect with others.
And finally we will reconnect
with our flexibility in finding answers
as a humanity collective.
Thank you.
So, thank you for having me here.
And I am really honored to be among you beautiful people.
So today I have brought with me a song
which is in Cantonese.
Anyone understands Cantonese here? Oh yay!
I chose this song deliberately
because it is a song that I wrote about Norway
and it is about a group of people 等待看見極夜以後
who are waiting to see the first sunlight
after the dark period of the polar nights.
(Nothing can be seen)
(Nothing can be seen when you can hardly see your hand)
(Ice are all around, I am left only with my pulse)
(Chasing after the song in the wind)
(Everything will be lost)
(No matter how hard you try, it will vanish anyways)
(Can I be weak walking alone)
(I wish for your answer within the darkness)
(Searching for reasons)
(Still pursuing after losses)
(It was diminished but reignited)
(Yesterday was gone)
(Left with the past)
(I still want to come) 嚴冬降臨
(Winter arrives)
(But will the sky shine)
(Light and darkness are all along the journey)
(We can find the answers at the cliffs)
(Just a few more days)
(Just wait a few more days while the wind blows right in our face)
(Finding the silhouette within darkness)
(We will meet again after the separation)
(The ray of sunlight)
(Is about to shine on lawns and fields)
(I hear the call of horns in the wind)
(This land will again witness)
(The bright sun taking flight)
(Searching for reasons)
(Still pursuing after losses)
(It was diminished but reignited)
(People sing again within the roaring wind)
(Now that the future is reversed)
(Lives come and go) 循環夜晝內
(In countless days and nights)
(Hidden between the lines) 我們
(We will) 轉動
(Spin and) 中躍起
(The sun arrives here) 群山再連結起
(The hills again connect)
(The sand becomes castles)
(The snow will melt)
(The woods will grow)
(Follow us outside)
(The time journey)
(The seasons come and go) 總可以再起來
(We can always get up again)
(And record our lives with the sun)

  1. Don't be use an umbrella…..because HK rioters…
They cover evil with an umbrella… Protester…… Don't provocatuer HK rioters make HK destroyer HK…

  2. What happens when you mix your music with politic? You get the Lennon Wall. While I applaud her decision to stand up for freedom and democracy, she is after all, Canadian. She still has a place to fall back on if all don’t works out in HK.. But what about the majority of Hong Kongers? Hmmm…

  4. same wicked and evil tactic the West is using HK children. aka black-clad = Syrian white-helmet as human shield. and of cause the demonic tongue of the western media promote hate and propaganda. in fact in a human earth there is not stupid people only fascist and evil heart will believe the demonic poisoning tongue. and people hate themselves.

Again, like is say. I'll see how long the Gweilo slave puppet HK govt and the police pretending and acting with no action very suspicious and who can you trust the 7.4 millions hkonger? HK is in more desperation will Beijing picking his tooth and watch like the Syrian – whitehelmet = black-clud thrown its own child into the fireing line as human shield. on the other hand in fact, it benefits Beijing and Beijing have plentiful of time. just sit and watch hkongers to cleans up the foreign spy's, network and terrorists cell and the cancer.

Rioters throw Molotov cocktails into the Wan Chai Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Station, set fires on roads and near MTR entrances, hurl bricks and petrol bombs at police officers trying to keep order near the headquarters of the HKSAR government. #HKRioters

  5. A traitor with a canadian passport (i read it some where) can you confirm it is true? Aka a Vietnamese?
Are you trying to resurrect your singing career?
I m not your fan. I dont think i want to hear you singing.

  6. Denise Ho is not a famous singer. Never heard of her before. Not a song that she sung is well known in Asia. A failed career in protest of her lack of success being left behind in her industry.

  7. If you believe her, you should fight for freedom in Norway as well. Cause a revolt, overthrow the government of the day. Otherwise your support for her is sheer hot air and hypocrisy.

  9. Under British rule Hong Kong was ruled by British governors appointed by Britain. None of them were Hong Kongers, none elected. So what is this democracy you hark back to while waving the Union Jack? You can fool some people, but not all.

  10. Hong Kong people deserve freedom and the H K government should be in jail for good without food for 100 days, thank you so much U S A every country deserve some freedom take care H K the world with you all the way 5***

  11. the Hong Kong government has put her finger down on all Hong Kong people,

Hong Kong people got every right to fight and vote for there rights and freedom is the right way to go and enjoy there own city.

  12. Attacking police officers with bricks, rods, and petrol bombs, destroying public facilities, blocking passengers from checking in at the airport, this is the so-called peaceful protests Ho claimed

  13. I told every Hong Kong people(STUDENT)in Melbourne city. Australia many years ago that do not trust China and you will lose all your freedom and they had not trusted me who and what I said and told them! I reminded them you watch and see it later, now it happened and if Hong Kong people is not united to fight back of all your freedom and you will lose everything and your living will be disaster and will not stand up again if you do not stand up fight it back to China? Do not live belong China again, to be independence country now or lose all again this is yours Hong Kong people?

  14. You are an amazing woman. You could easily close your eyes and enjoy all the money you earn but instead, you stood up for your country, your people, and most of all, the right thing. Hong Kong is lucky to have you. The world is lucky to have you. thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

  15. She sings like a cat being skinned alive.
She shall not quit her NIGHT job standing in the street corner waiting for Johns just yet.
She is a lesbian, how can she entertain Johns?

  16. aA Vietnamese-born Chinese with no roots. Trying to gain popularity through these protests and has no objectives in participating. A big fool and was thrown with red paint in Taiwan. Serve her right and better stay away.

  17. DEnise Ho asks a very good question … one that I have also been asking…
….. Why are the people of Hong Kong so opposed to Chinese rule…. after all Hong Kong belongs to China …. After all, the Hong Kong people were satisfied to be ruled … undemocratically… by Britain for 150 years……….

  18. Denise Ho has obviously made enough money ….. she no longer has to work…….and now needs to find something else to pass the time……Why not be an instigator of the riots and the supporter of the "peaceful protesters" in Hong Kong……..?
She must give back her "easy money"……..to those former fans in China that she duped……..

  19. No matter how good you explain to the world you are wasting your time and effort as Hong Kong belongs to China. Where are your roots, ancestors, Chinese surname come from? If China and Hong Kong are not stable and peace can those anti China survive? Unfortunate people are facing life for survival but the better ones are wasting and ruin their life. Our life is getting shorter day by day. Life is uncertain and not permanent. Everyone behaviour good and bad has it's cause and effect within ourself and the environment that makes life uncertain. We are all responsible for our own misery and happiness. You all had been destroying the properties of Hong Kong from the tax payers money. It's Democrazy and Riotcrazy for the world to see these bad Chinese disgracing behaviour without morality. To live peacefully and morally there is no fear of any kinds of Rule Of Law. But nobody can go against Law Of Nature (Karma) No one can escape and be above Rule Of Karma. Good begets Good. Bad begets Bad.
    Respect yourself then respect others
Respect own country then respect others

  20. Denise Ho fuck u don't show urself in public anymore fuck u do see how u and ur fucking friend make hk become hk is became a war zone and a laughing stock for the western and the world!the world is not pity or sympathy on hk just laughing at hk ppl that they are killing them self u shouldn't call ur self hongkonger u should call ur self bitcher of hk bitch cunt!!!!

  21. Shame on her. Hi-jacks the opportunity, beautifies terrorism, paints the black white to make herself famous. She is a shame to Anita. When things get worse, she simply leaves HK and hides her tail back to Canada. History will tell and justify the truth.

  22. Soon Curry lamb will ban use of umbrellas in her desperation to curb further protests.she has run out of ideas to settle the problem she created due to her short sightedness. She is a failed leader to her people. it is now hong kong people fighting Hongkong people. China is on the sidelines watching the fight. and waiting to step in when the time is right.

  23. Communism is, no doubt, so afraid loosing to democracy because they are afraid loosing greed, corruptions, authoritarian, aggression, lawless, control, brainwashing people…..

  24. A nobody and or a would be singer '' D HO'', whose singing career was fast fading into oblivion, ''black-hole'' to be precise, came up with a brilliant idea to revive her what was at best a mediocre attempt to become a singing star. And it is; ''To become a ''Traitor''. Selling out China amid the trade war between US & China will do it. I will be famous again……. but only as a ''Traitor'' same as those who sold China out to the Japanese in WW2. What a ''SLUG''

  25. I have not seen HK people being oppressed like they claim, they enjoyed full freedom under China's rule
otherwise they won't be allowed to travel all over the world.
The only people who should be scared are the trouble makers.

  26. Without the basic knowledge of Chinese history and a real understanding of HK, please stop misguide youngsters in the name of freedom of speech. Besides, as a Canadian, you've had no right to fight for "we." You are neither Chinese, British, nor HONGKONGERS.
