England vs Italy | World Cup 2014 | Brick-by-brick

Welcome to the jungle in Manaus for this group
D game. England and Italy getting their campaigns underway, a tough opening fixture, both sides
will be wanting at least a point from this one. That now infamous spray-painted pitch looking,
it has to be said, a little on the bobbly side by international standards. Managers in position. Not as hot and humid
as we had feared but this is going to be a challenging game. So, corner to Italy. And it’s taken short.
Pirlo sells the dummy, that’s Marchisio, and that’s the lead for Italy, finding it’s way
through the crowd to the back of the net. Great strike from the Juventus man to give
Italy the lead. Well, it had been coming, a well worked set
play there, England falling for the dummy and failing to close down the ball. Not a
lot Joe Hart could do there. How will England respond? Sterling on the ball, picks out Rooney on
the left, can he find the advancing Sturridge in the centre? Yes he can! That’s the way
to respond. England 1 Italy 1. A great strike from the Liverpool man, three goals in his
last four England appearances and not many are sweeter than that. Ah, but there’s trouble for England here,
someone’s been hurt in the goal celebration. I think that’s the England physio Gary Lewin. Looks nasty, it looks like he was trampled
as he joined the celebrations for this great first touch finish there from Daniel Sturridge. England will need to get those scenes out
of their heads. Good second half pressure now from Italy,
that’s Candrevo, he beats Baines, gets the cross away… Oh, and that’s Balotelli heading
it home. Italy take the lead again. Candrevo’s been causing all sorts of problems
down the England left and wouldn’t you just know if was Balotelli heading past his former
teammate to score what could be Italy’s winning goal. So it’s finished England 1 Italy 2. Welcome to the opening game of the 2014 World
Cup. After all the hype and expectation the tournament is finally here, Croatia opening
up against a star-studded Brazilian line up.
