Forums in Moodle.

Welcome. This video will demonstrate how
to participate in a discussion forum in Moodle. Discussion forums in Moodle are a
great way to have conversations with your classmates in an online class. They
provide a way for you to interact and build relationships with other students
while discussing course content. They can be both social and academic. There are
five different types of discussion forums in Moodle. In this demo course, I
set up an introduction forum using the five different types to show you an
example of how to post in each. We will look at several of the forum types in
this video. Forum type number one is a single, simple discussion. New posts and
topics can only be created by teachers. Students only have the power to comment
on an existing discussion thread. First, read the question or instructions posted
by the teacher. In a real class, you may see numerous posts by other students for
which you can reply and carry the discussion forward. Select reply, down in
the bottom right hand corner, and then you will have the ability to write your
response in this area using the editing tools above. You will also have the
ability to add an attachment here by dragging and dropping or selecting the
add a file icon here at the top of this screen. In addition, if you would like to
be subscribed to this forum check the box so you will receive notifications of
any posts from other students or from the teacher. Finally, when you’re
satisfied with your post select the button at the bottom that says post to
forum. Now your post will show up underneath the initial teacher’s post, and
other students will be able to read your response and reply to your post as well.
In our next forum type example, each person posts one discussion.
Each individual gets to post a single discussion thread but has the ability to
comment on anyone else’s. To post your discussion, simply select add a new
discussion topic. You may add a subject or title to your post in this area, type
a message, and then post to forum. To reply to classmates, you will simply
select reply. Forum type number three is a standard forum for general use.
Students will see an introduction text above a list of discussions and must
click on a discussion to see the entire contents. For example, this discussion is
titled the days of the week. If I select that topic, I will see the discussion
posted by Suzanne Turcotte and be able to reply if desired. To add a new discussion
topic, simply select this button here in the middle and start a new discussion
with the same requirements as before to add a subject, a message, you have the
ability to attach a file, and post to forum. Forum type number four is a Q&A
forum. This is used when a teacher wants students to individually answer a
question. Students cannot create new topics and will not see other answers to
the question until they’ve posted their own. Forum type number five is a standard
forum displayed in blog-like format. This type of forum works similarly to the
standard forum, but each discussion shows the first post similar to how it would
look if it were in a blog. So, that’s it. Thanks for joining me. Bye!
