How To Make A Blog on WordPress – 2019 – For Beginners


What’s up everyone? It’s Jameson from
NYC Tech Club, and I have my laptop in front of me. What we’re going to do in
this video tutorial is show you how to use WordPress and
how to build a blog website. So if you want a professional looking
blog, check out the tour of the website that I’m going to give you in just a few
seconds. And then if you like what you see, go ahead and follow along. Watch
the video tutorial, and I’ll show you how to build everything step-by-step. I hope
you enjoy. I’ll see you on the inside. So this is the homepage. You can see
right here that right at the top, we’re going to have a header that you can customize.
You can change these colors to be whatever colors that you want. You can
also add your own custom logo right here. What you’ll notice is that we have a slider
with all of our recent blog posts or featured blog posts right here. And then
below this, this is where you’re going to have a featured blog section. So you can
see we have a little title and a little excerpt right here and a link right here
to continue reading on this blog post. Or what you can do is scroll down and
see all of your most recent blog posts right over here. There’s always going to be a link to
different pages so if you have a bunch of different posts, you can just go to those
different pages right there. And then at the bottom over here, we can add an
Instagram feed for your Instagram account and also some social media
buttons that link to your social media pages right here so that you can get some followers. And then down at the bottom, we’ll also add our logo and
a footer menu right over here. What you’ll notice is on the right-hand
side, we do have a sidebar with our featured posts. We can customize this with a Facebook Likebox or any other widget. We also have a newsletter opt in
form. So if you want to collect email addresses or just get people to sign up
for a newsletter, I’m going to show you how to integrate this into your WordPress
blog also. Again, you can customize all of these colors. I’ll show you how to do
that in this video tutorial in the Theme Settings. Right at the top, you can see
that we have a Search function over here also. So this is the homepage. What I
want to do is just show you what one of the blog posts pages look like that we’re
going to create today. So right here, you can see that this is a blog post page.
We have our sidebar on the right-hand side, and then we have our featured
image right here, our category names right here, our blog title and some
author information right here. I’ll show you how to customize the text or
the content section, so you can add headers, quotes, links, and images.
At the bottom over here, we’ll have some blog tags and some links to our previous
and our next blog post right here. You can also insert the option of having comments. So if you want to let your visitors leave a comment on your
blog posts, you can do that right here. And then at the bottom, we will have our
Instagram feed, then our social media buttons, and our footer section down here. So this is what a blog post page looks
like. I will show you how to customize your blog posts, customize the content
and really format the page look, however you want. But I want to jump to some
of the pages that we’re going to create. So the first page that we’re going to
learn how to create is the About page. You can see it right over here. We have
our title at the top, we can add an image, and then a little bio section or a
story about your blog website. You can customize this however you want. You can see that we have a link right here. Again, you can customize the
link colors and the hover colors to be whatever you want. So it’s really up to
you. I’m going to give you all the tools and resources that you need to customize
your blog website with WordPress. So I’m really excited to
show you how to do that. The next page that we’re going to
learn how to make is the Gallery page. You can see that right here, we’re going
to have our title and then we can insert some images. If you want to make this
a likebox where these images pop up, I can show you how to do that also.
So this is the Gallery page. You might want a gallery for your blog website;
you might not. You can add whatever pages that you want. Again, I’m going to
give you all the tools and resources and show you how to use WordPress so that
you can customize all the pages that you need for your blog website. The last page that we’re going to learn
how to make is this Contact page right here. So we’ll have the title at the
top. You can insert an image and some text, and then you can insert a contact
form right here for your visitors to leave you a comment. The message will get
sent right to your inbox. So if you want to learn how to create a Contact page just
like this, keep watching this video tutorial and I’ll show you how. So pretty much, this is the blog website
that we’re going to learn how to build with WordPress today. Again, you can
customize the formats, the layouts, the colors, the options and everything that
you want with this blog website tutorial. I’m going to show you how step-by-step. Again, you’re going to learn how to use
WordPress if you don’t know how to use WordPress after you watch this video tutorial. So I know there are a bunch of different
video creators out there that create video tutorials, but I really think that this one is
really good. I really, really believe in this one. I worked really hard on it,
and I hope you really like this website. If you do, keep watching this video tutorial
because I’m going to show you how to build this exact website step-by-step.
So if you’re ready, I’m ready. Let’s get started. Alright, so I want to welcome you guys
to this video tutorial on how to make a blog website with WordPress for free.
I am currently on the Text Tutorial right here on the screen. The first step in this
video tutorial is registering a domain and getting hosting. So if you want, you can
click on the link to bring you to this page right here, and there should be a link in
the video description. What you’ll notice is this is the Text Tutorial. So it’s going to
have all the steps that we’re going to cover in this video tutorial. Once you come to this page, you’re going
to notice that there’s a link over here to HostGator. Also in Step 1 where we are
doing the domain and hosting, there are a few different links over here also.
These are affiliate links. So HostGator does pay me a small little
fee if you use my link. I like to recommend HostGator to all of my viewers and all of
my clients because I’ve used HostGator throughout my career running different
websites. I think they’re really reliable, they’re cheap and they have great
customer service, and that’s why I’m going to recommend them to you.
So if you want to come to the Text Tutorial and come down to Step 1 and just click on anyone of these links that say, “HostGator”. That’s going to bring you to the HostGator website. So we can register a domain, which is our web address, and then get hosting, which allows us to run our
website and store all of our content. So I’m just going to click on this link
right here. Once you’re on the HostGator website, this is where we’re going to go
to register our domain and get hosting. So a domain is your web address, and you
can see that this one is hostgator.com. You need to have a web address in order
to have a website. You also need hosting in order to run your website and store all
of your content. So we can get both of these from HostGator. This is where
you’re going to have to pay a small little fee. But with HostGator, you can save a
bunch of money because they do offer some custom coupon codes
that we can offer to you. So what we want to do on the HostGator
website is come down to where it says, “Web Hosting”. Go ahead and click on
this link. It’s going to bring you to this page right here. You’ll notice that there
are three different plans. What we’re going to do is focus on the Hatchling and the Baby Plan, because the Business Plan is a little too expensive and more than
what we need. We can always upgrade to this one a little bit later. So let me just explain these two plans to
you. The Hatchling plan lets you build one website and one website only and the
Baby Plan lets you build as many different websites as you want. But you do have to
register unique domain names each time. So if you want to run more than one
website, you want to get the Baby Plan, but if all you’re doing is building one
website, then all you need is the Hatchlings Plan. So for this video tutorial,
since we’re just building a blog website, I’m going to select the Hatching Plan,
but it’s really up to you which one you select. But once you’re ready, go ahead
and come down here and click on the “Buy Now!” button. Once you’re on this page right here,
this is where we’re going to go to register our domain and select our hosting
service. I want to walk you through all these different steps just to make sure
that you fill everything out correctly. So on Step 1 where you choose a domain,
if you already own a domain, you can click on this tab right here and just type in your
domain address. We’re going to register a new domain, because I’m going to
assume that you’re starting from scratch. So we’re going to stay on this tab right
here. What we want to do is come to this search box and type in the web address
that we want to register. So I’ll type in “theyogayoga.com” and push “Search”.
So this is going to be the web address that I’m going to have if it’s available.
I might turn this into an ecommerce website a little bit later or down the road, and make that a video tutorial also. So you can see right here that we have
The Yoga Yoga, and it says, “Added” with this green notification right here. If you see this green notification, that means that we’re good to go. If you don’t see this,
what that means is someone else registered the domain that you want.
So you have to search for a new one, and see if that’s available so that you
can register it. So if you see this green check mark, then what I want you to do
is come down to the bottom. Down here, you should see the Domain Privacy
Protection. So if you want to protect all of your information that you’re going to have
to register your domain and your hosting, then you want to leave this checked. But if
you’re going to have this protection, you should notice that there is a small
little fee here. So you don’t have to actually pay for this if you don’t care
about having the registration public. So if you are okay with people knowing
that you registered a website domain and having your name listed or associated
with the name or the website, then you can just uncheck this. So what I’m going
to do is uncheck this because this is an extra cost that you don’t really need.
I can always add this back later. So I’m going to uncheck this so that I
don’t pay this monthly fee. You can do whatever you want, and then once
you’re ready, come down to Step 2. On Step 2, this is where going to choose
your hosting plan. So in this first drop down right here, this is where you can
select the Hatchling or the Baby Plan. So remember, the Hatching Plan is if
you want to build one website and one website only, this is all you need. And then
for the Baby Plan, if you have more than one website and you want to host them
on the same account, then you want to select the Baby Plan. So we’re going to
select the Hatching Plan for this video tutorial, just because I’m only building one
website, and that’s the blog website. And then what you can do is choose your
billing cycle. This is pretty much your contract with HostGator for how long you
want your hosting. You can see you can select one month, all the way to 36
months, and it’s cheaper the longer the terms are. So what I usually recommend
is either 6 or 12 months to my viewers and my clients just to give them enough
time to know whether or not they want to run a website or not. So you can really
choose whatever you want. For this video. I’m just going to select “1 month”.
And then what you can do is create a username and a security pin.
So I’m not going to do this with you because I’ve already created my account
but if you need to, go ahead and pause the video and create the username and
security pin. And then come down to Step 3. So Step 3 is where you going to enter your
billing information. So again, if you need to just pause the video and fill out all this
information. I already have an account so I’ve already filled out all the stuff so I don’t
need to. But you can pause the video and fill out all that stuff. And then once you’re
ready, push “Play” and then come down and we’ll go to Step 4. Otherwise,
we’re just going to continue on right now. So Step 4 is adding additional services.
By default, HostGator selects some of these for you. So you can see they
have these blue check marks right here. These are really just extra costs that you
don’t really need. So what you can do is uncheck these boxes. You can always use
some plugins to create a lot of this stuff for free. So plugins are WordPress
plugins. We’ll talk about that a little bit later in this video tutorial. But for this
service, this is free, the SSL certificate, and this is going to secure your
website from information being passed. So I’ll show you how to install this a little
bit later. But all the other ones you don’t really need, and I can show you how to
create an email address with your domain for free. I do have some video tutorials
that I can link you to. So if you want, you can check these boxes right now
or you can deselect them like I did. You can always add these services
back later if you need them, okay? So once you’re ready, come down to Step
5. This might be, at least in my opinion, the most important step in this whole
section of the signup, because this is where you can enter a coupon code.
By default, HostGator puts in a coupon code for you. You can see that you
get a small little discount right here. So with this HostGator coupon, you get
about $2 off. What I want you to do is delete this coupon code and type in
“NYCTECH30” and then click on the “Validate” button right here. What that’s
going to do is give you a very large discount. This is an affiliate coupon code,
which gives you about 50 to 60% OFF depending on your terms for your
HostGator account. But you can see right here that after I put in the
“NYCTECH30”, the discount increases to about 60% OFF. So you’re saving a lot
of money if you type in “NYCTECH30″. So go ahead and type that in. Once
you’re ready, click the “Validate” button. And then, all you have to do is come down
here and check this box that says, “You agree to the terms, and then just click on the “Checkout Now!” button. Now we’re going to come to this page
right here and we’re just going to wait for HostGator to set up our account.
So we just have to wait a little bit. So you can see right here, it says it’s
going to set up our account and just please wait. So we’ll just wait until
this redirects us to the next page. Once everything is set up, you should
come to this page right here. You should see this notification that says,
“Welcome to the HostGator Family!” What you can do is click on this button
right here that says, “Bring you to your dashboard”. I don’t know why it has
this little circle right here, but it’s going to open up this page right here. You should
see your website or web domain right here. What you want to do is launch the
cPanel. So we can click on this button right here or what you can do is go to your
email inbox and you should see this email from HostGator titled, “Your account info”
and it should have all of your login details right here and some account information.
So you have your username, domain, password and name servers. What we’re
going to do is go to our Control Panel. So there should be a link right here to
that. You can click on this link on your email or you can go to the dashboard that
you see right here, and just click on this button. So I’m going to click on this
and it should open up a new page right over here. So we’ll just
let this load really quickly. Once you’re on your Control Panel, you
should be brought to this page right here. This is where you can go to install
WordPress, manage your database and email addresses, and everything like that.
So this is the control panel for your entire WordPress website. All we have to do
right here is go to where it says, “Popular Links”. We want to install
WordPress so that we can use that to build out our website. So right up here,
just click on this link that says, “Build a New WordPress Site”. Once you come to
this page, all we’re going to do is come down here and select our domain name,
leave this blank, and then click “Next” right here. And then we can just put in a
website name or title. You can always change this later. I’ll show you how to do that. So right now I’ll just type in “The Yoga
Yoga”. And then for the admin username, I’ll type an “admin” and my first and last
name, and then just my email address right here. Once you’re ready, go ahead
and click on these two boxes that says you “agree to the terms”, and then
click on the “Install” button right here. Now all we have to do is just wait for
WordPress to install on to our server, and then we’re good to go. So that was
pretty quick. Now we have our installation complete right here, and we have
our installation details right here. So what I want you to do is I want you
to highlight all of this, if I can highlight everything. I want you to save this
somewhere because you’re going to need this information to login to your
WordPress website. So what you can do is go and maybe open up a new email
and just paste that in right here. We’re going to go back to this tab right
here and we’re going to go and login to our new website or the WordPress
website. So click on “Login” right here. Now you should be on the login page for
your WordPress website. If you need the username and password and you didn’t
save it, you can always go to your email. This is the NYC Tech Club email that I put
in for my WordPress website when I installed WordPress, and you can see that
we have this “Install Complete” email. Down here, we have all of our details,
such as our URL or admin URL, which is what we’re going to use to login to our
WordPress website, and it has the wp-admin at the end (so that’s the admin
URL) and then our username and password. So you can always just click on
this, and you’ll come to the login page right here. We can just type in our
username and then go and get our password. Just highlight this, copy it
and paste that in right here. Just click “Remember Me” and click “Login”
once you’re ready. We’ll save this, and we should be good to go. Once you’re logged in, this is the
WordPress dashboard. You’re going to become very familiar with the WordPress
dashboard as we go through this video tutorial, because this is where we’re going
to go to install our theme, some plugins and learn how to create our blog posts
and pages and upload our media images and all that stuff. So this is the main
Dashboard center, control Center, whatever you want to call it for the
WordPress website. You always want to make sure that you’re logged in in order
to edit your website or create different pages and posts. So what we can do
really quickly is just go and check out what our WordPress website looks like,
and then we can go through the other steps of creating our blog website. So if you want, you can just type in your
web address right here. Or what you can do is hover over your website name on
the upper left and click on “Visit Site”. What that’s going to do is bring you to
your homepage right here. You can see right now that it looks very basic, and
there’s nothing really special about it. We’re using a default theme that the
WordPress developers upload whenever you install WordPress. So we’re going to
go and install a new theme and then customize it and then create all of our
content, so it’s going to look like the demo website that I showed you a little earlier. So I just wanted to show you what the
website looks like right now. You can see that you’re logged in because you have
this top bar up here. If you ever want to log out, you can just hover over your
admin name, and then click “Log Out” right here. So we can also talk about
how to change your password for your username. So let’s go and do that really
quickly. So I’m going to go back to my WordPress Dashboard by hovering over
my website name and clicking on “Dashboard”. Once you’re back on the
WordPress Dashboard, what we’re going to do is really quickly show you how
you can edit your username and your password and all that stuff. So what I
want you to do on the left-hand side is down here where it says, “Users” hover
over that and then click on “All Users. Once you’re on this page right here,
you should see a list of all the usernames that you’ve created. We should only have
one right now, since we just created our WordPress website and our username.
So we can just hover over this one and click on “Edit”. Once we’re on the Edit
page for our username, we can change our personal options and all that stuff.
What I want to do is just come down here to where it says, “Name”. If you want to
put in your first or last name or both and you want to change the nickname that
shows up when you create your blog post so that the author name isn’t admin,
it’s your actual name, what you can do is just type in your name right here. You can
also just type in your nickname, so maybe I’ll just type in “Jameson K”. Now if I come
to this drop down where it says, “Display name publicly as” I should see the option
to select whichever name that I want to show up whenever I create a blog post,
and it says, “Written by”. You can also change your email and all that stuff and
then come down here. You can put in a little bio. So I might do this on my own
and then I’ll just click “Save” a little bit later. So if you want, you can type in a
little bio about yourself that shows up as a blurb underneath your blog posts. If you
want to put a profile photo, you can click on this link and walk through the steps
and doing that on your own. And then here is what I really want to talk
about, the password option. So if you want to secure your website or change your password, you can just click on “Generate Password”, save that
password, and then click on “Update Profile” and then you’ll have a new profile
with a new password and all that stuff, okay? So if you do make any changes,
what you want to do is click on “Update Profile” just to save everything. So I’m
going to do that right now. And then really quickly, if you want to create some
additional users, so maybe you have a server admin or another writer or
something, you can always click on this link that says “Add New User” right over
here on the left-hand side. What you can do is you’ll come to this page and you can
just fill out all the information, create a username and email address associated
with this account and then all this other stuff. Again, what you can do down here
is choose what type of role that you want for this user. So if you want to give them
access to the entire site to update the theme and all that stuff, you want to give
them administrator access. If you just want to make them an author, you can
click on this one right here. And then just click on the blue button right here to add
a new user, and then you’ll have a new user that can login to your WordPress website, okay? So that’s what you’re going to do to change your password and
edit your profile name and all that stuff. So what I’m going to do now is just go
back to the WordPress Dashboard. We can probably move on to the next
step. So I’m just going to click on this link right here that says, “Dashboard”. Once
you’re back on the WordPress dashboard, now what we’re going to do is install the
WordPress theme that we’re going to use. If you don’t know what a theme is, it’s a
template with different options such as settings, color options, layouts that you
can use to customize your theme. It’s pretty much a template, and there are a
bunch of different themes. We’re going to be using a theme called the “Cali Theme” today by the A Themes developers. So we want to go to the Themes page.
So if you hover over “Appearance” on the left-hand side of your dashboard,
go ahead and click on “Themes”. What you’re going to do is come to this
page right here, and these are the themes that are already installed on your WordPress website. These are installed by default. So we’re going to go and
search for a wordpress.org theme. So click on this button right over here,
and it’s going to bring you to the Themes page. What you can do on this page once
it loads is you can search for any type of theme that a developer has uploaded that’s approved by WordPress. You can see we’re on the Featured tab right here,
and there are 15 different themes. You can always hover over any of these
and click on it. And then you can see details and you can preview the theme
and all that stuff. There are different filters right here, and there are thousands
of different themes. If you wanted to search for a certain type of theme like an
ecommerce theme or a photography theme, you can search for those
keywords right here. What I want you to do, if you want to use the same theme
that we’re using, which is going to be the easiest way to follow this tutorial,
is I want you to type in “Cali” because that’s the name of the theme that we’re
going to be using. So it’s C-A-L-I, and you’re going to see the theme right here.
So you can see this thumbnail and if you click on “Details & Preview, it is by the A
Themes developer. So we’re just going to go and install this because I already
showed you what the theme’s going to look like or the website’s going to look like
once we’re done customizing it. If you like it, then just go ahead and click on the
“Install” button right here. We’re just going to let this install and then once it’s ready,
we’re going to click on the “Activate” button so that we can start using this
theme. So just click on that. It should bring you back to the Themes page
right here. What we can do now is go and check out what our website looks
like now that we installed this new theme. You can see that it’s active right here,
and you can always go and install other themes if you want. It’s really up to you.
So before we go and check out what this team looks like, let’s go and publish our
website. So if you do see this notification right here that says, “Your site is currently displaying a “Coming Soon” page, what I want you to do is just click on this to
publish it so that anyone can see your site. We can do this at the end if you want,
but since we have this notification right here, let’s just go ahead and do that right
now just to get out of the way. So our site is live, and we can go and check it out
really quickly. So you can see we have this notification. So we can click on this
link right here. It’s going to open up a new tab right here. Now you can see the
theme looks a lot different than what we looked at when we first installed
WordPress, and that’s because we’re using this new theme. What we’re going
to do in this video tutorial is go and customize this to really make it how
the demo WordPress website looks like. So right now we just have some demo
posts right here that we’re going to delete. You can see that we haven’t customized
our sidebar, we can change the colors and add our logo and all that stuff, okay?
So let’s close this and now we should be on the Themes page right here. Even if
you’re on the dashboard, that’s okay. You can see right here it says, “This
theme recommends the following plugins”. So what we’re going to do in
the next step is we’re going to install the required plugins that we need for our
WordPress website, and then we’ll go through customizing everything. So what
we’re going to do now is just move on to the next step. Now what we’re going to do
is show you how to install some plugins for this WordPress tutorial. So plugins
are tools that help you customize your WordPress website. There are a bunch
of different ones that you can install. I’ll recommend some to you but first,
what we’re going to do is just install the ones that the theme developers
recommend. So you should see this notification right here that says “This
theme recommends the following plugins”. So these plugins you can see
right here are the Contact Form plugin. This is a tool kit for the theme, this plugin
right here, and then this is an optin form for MailChimp, and then this is a for our
Instagram feed. So we’re going to go and click on this link that says “Begin
installing plugins” and it’s going to bring us to this page right here. We can just
select all of these and go into this drop down, and click on “Install” and click “Apply”. Once the plugins are installed, you want
to come back to the “Install Required Plugins page. So I just clicked on “Install
Plugins” over here, and it’ll bring you back to this page and we can select “All” again
and then go in here and we want to click on activate. So if you get a warning for
any of these, don’t worry about that. That’s okay. Just come back to the install
Plugins page, select all of these plugins and click “Apply” right here
to activate everything. Once everything is activated, then you
should see nothing on this list right here. Now what we can do is go to the Plugins
page. So hover over “Plugins” and click on “Install Plugins”. Once we’re on the
Plugins page right here, you can see a list of all your plugins. If you ever want to
deactivate any of these or delete them, you can do that on your own. WordPress
does install some additional plugins for you. So if you want to get rid of those,
you can do that also. So what I want to do is show you how you
can search for some additional plugins. So we’re going to add two more in this
video tutorial. So we want to click on the “Add New” button right here. That’s going to bring us to the Plugins page. You can filter by plugins at the top or you can search for keywords to find the plugin that you want or the type of plugin and
then find which one that you want after the search results come up. So down at
the bottom, there are popular tags down here. So if you ever want to search for
plugins for ecommerce, for gallery or for WooCommerce, you can just click on
these and you filter through the results. Also on each of these plugins, there’s a
little description and then the number of reviews or stars and also the number
of active installations there are. So we’re going to find an Easy Facebook
Likebox for our sidebar for this tutorial. So I’m going to type an easy Facebook
Likebox right here and just push “Enter”. We’re going to get some search results
and the one that we want is this one right here by Danish Ali Malik. There’s over
100,000 active installations. So go ahead and click on the “Install Now” button. Once that’s installed, all we have to do is
click on the “Activate” button to use this plugin. We’re going to be redirected back
to the Plugins page. So once we’re back on this page, you can see that we have
the Easy Facebook Likebox right here. Let’s go and find one more. That’s going
to be the Really Simple SSL plugin so that we can turn on the SSL certificate for our
WordPress website, which come for free with HostGator. So in this search box,
we’ll type in “really simple ssl” and just search for that. The one that we want is
this one right here. So it has 2 million active installations. So go ahead
and click on the “Install Now” button. Once it’s installed, just click
on the “Activate” button right here. So that’s all you have to do to search
and find plugins that you want for your WordPress website. So now we should
be back on the Plugins page right here. That’s all I wanted to cover with plugins.
So we have the plugins that we need from the theme developer, and then we also
added a few other ones that I’m going to have in the text tutorial also, if you need
the names of them. So you can find some additional ones on your own, but that’s
what we’re going to cover in this section. So if you want to keep watching for the
next section, we’re going to move on and we’re going to cover WordPress settings. Now what we’re going to do in this next
step is we’re going to go through our WordPress settings. So we just installed
the Really Simple SSL Certificate plugin. Now what we’re going to do is move on to
the next step, which is going to be going through our WordPress settings. So we
just installed the Really Simple SSL plugin, so we can turn on our SSL certificate.
So if you’re on the Plugins page right here, where you have this notification because
you installed this plugin, go ahead and click on this link right here that says,
“Go ahead and activate the SSL”. Now you should see this notification that
says “The SSL is activated”. So we are good to go, and we want to go
through our WordPress settings now. So on the left-hand side of your
WordPress dashboard, hover over Settings, and let’s go to the General tab. What we’re going to have to do is for security purposes, we’re going to have to
login because we just activated our SSL certificate. So go ahead and type in your
username and your password, and then just click “Login”. Once you come to this
page, this is the General Settings. This is where you can go to change your site title
or your taglines. So maybe I’ll change my tagline to “Professionally Designed”.
So the site title and tagline show up on the web browser tab and also in other
places on your WordPress website sometimes, so you probably want to
update that. And then down here where it says, “WordPress and Site Address,
now that we have turned on the SSL certificate, we should see this “s” right
here. So if you have an SSL certificate and you downloaded the SSL plugin and you
activated it, you should have “https” now. What we can do is just put in “www.” right
here for the site and the website address. So if you do this, make sure that you don’t
change or delete anything else, because if you do add anything that’s not supposed
to be here, then you’re not going to be able to access your website and you’re
going to have to start all over again. So just double and triple check to
make sure that everything looks correct. If you do add that, be very, very careful.
And then all we’re going to do here is I’m just going to come down to the bottom
and click “Save Changes”. What we’re going to have to do is just log back in for
security purposes, because we did just update our WordPress and site address. So once we’re logged back in, we’re back
on the Dashboard right here, and I want to go back to our Settings. So hover over
this. This time around, I want to go to the Reading tab. What you can do here
is we’re actually not going to change anything, but I want to note that right here
where it says your homepage displays, if you’re not creating a blog website and
you want to have a homepage and a separate blog page, you want to click on
“A static page” right here and you want to create a page for your homepage and
a blog post page. You can set these right here. But since we’re making a
WordPress blog with WordPress, we can just make sure that we have your
latest post selected and click “Save Changes” if you do make any changes.
But we’re not doing that right here. So we can just move on to the
Discussions tab right here, just to show you how you can edit or modify the
settings to let people leave comments. So by default on the Discussion Settings
page, you’re going to be able to let people leave comments on your blog posts, and they’re going to be required to fill out their name and their email. If you ever want to
disable comments for all of your different blog posts, you can do that right here.
So you can just select these options. We’re not going to change anything but
again, if you do make any changes, come down to the bottom and click “Save
Changes”. Otherwise, let’s go and jump to the Permalinks tab right here. On the
Permalink Settings, this is where you can select the type of URL that you want for
your different pages and posts. I like to use the “Post name” option. I think this
is the best for SEO and easiest to understand. So it’s just going to have
your website name and then the title of the page or post right here. So that’s the
one that I select and that’s the one that I recommend to you, but it’s really up to
you. Just go ahead and click on “Save Changes” once you’re ready. Once
everything is saved, we are pretty much done with the WordPress Settings. If you
wanted to, you can go into the Privacy tab and create a Privacy Policy page. There’s
a default one that WordPress has for you that you can just fill out, so I’ll let you do
that on your own. But we just covered the WordPress settings that we need to for this WordPress tutorial. So if you’re ready, we’re going to move on to the next step. Now what we’re going to do is move on,
and we’re going to download the demo content for this video tutorial. The reason
why we’re going to do that right now is so that you have a logo and favicon to use
just in case you need one for this tutorial. But if you have your own content and
your own logo and everything, you can use your own and you don’t need to
follow the step. But if you do need some placeholders, then what I want you to do
is go to the text tutorial on how to make a blog website with WordPress for free,
and then come down to whatever step that we’re on. So right now in the text
tutorial, we’re on Step 6. You can see right here it says demo content. There’s going to be a link right here to download a zip file with some images to use for this
video tutorial. Some of the images might not be the exact same images that you
see on the demo website. The reason is because I have to pay for the copyrights
to use those images. So I can’t really share all of those for you, but I will have
images for you to use and you can always substitute those images for
your own once you’re ready. So click on this link right here to
download the zip file. I already have this saved, so I don’t need to click to
download this, but I want you to do that. And then let’s go back to the blog website
that we’re making with WordPress. We want to go and upload the demo
content. So to do that, we’re going to hover over Media and we can click on
“Add New”. Once you’re on the Upload New Media page, this is where you can go
to upload all of your images and content. Or what you can do is you can always
upload your images and content one by one when you create pages and posts.
What I want to do is just upload everything in the demo content folder
right now so that we have that in our library so we can access that. So what I’m
going to do is click on “Select Files” and I’m going to go to the folder where I saved
everything. So I’m on this blog demo content folder, and I’m just going to select
all of my images and demo content. So you can see I selected everything.
I’ll just click to upload all this. So you can see that everything is getting uploaded
right now. So I’m just going to wait for everything to upload, and then I’ll show
you how you can go to your Media Library and edit your images if you want and then
you can start using them. So let me just wait for everything to upload. Once
everything is done, I’ll come right back. So you probably have to wait a little bit
too to let everything upload. So I’ll see you in just a few minutes. Alright, so welcome back. I let the images
upload for a little bit. So you can see we have all of our images right here. You
probably have all of yours uploaded also if you’re using the demo content. If you
ever want to edit any of these images, you can click on the “Edit” button right
here or what you can do is go to your Media Library by clicking on this link
under Media right here. That’s going to bring you to your Media Library. You’re
going to see all of your images populate right here that you uploaded. If you ever
want to edit any of these, you can just click on the image like this, and you’ll get this pop up right here. You can see the dimensions, the file size. And then over
here, you can click on the “Delete” button or you can edit this image by clicking on
this button right here. You’re going to get this pop up that says, “Attachment
Details” and the image should show up just like this. What you can do is you can
crop the image if you wanted to find an area to crop by clicking on
this little button right here. You can move the images to different
angles or different sides. If you want to change the dimensions of this image,
you can do that also over here. So if you do make any changes, you want
to click on the “Save” button, but we’re going to cancel this because I don’t want
to make any changes. So we’re going to close this also. So we also have all of our
images right here. We’re good to go in this section. What I want to do now is move
on to the next section, which is going to be covering the theme Settings. So again,
for the images, if you want to upload them one by one when you create your
pages and posts, I’ll show you how to do that also but you can also upload
everything in bulk just like we did, okay? So now we’re going to move on to the
next step. So now what we’re going to do is move on to the next step, which is
going to be covering our theme settings. So this is where we can customize our
style, the font colors, and different layout options for our blog website. So if you’re
on the WordPress dashboard, on the left-hand side, to go to your theme
settings, what we’re going to do is hover over Appearance, and then click on the
“Customize” button. So we’re on the Customize page, and you can see right
here that there are some tabs on the left-hand side. These are tabs that the
developer created so that you can go and customize your WordPress blog or theme
with different colors, the logo, typography, the layout, and so forth. And then on the
right-hand side over here, this is a preview screen. So whenever you make changes
on the Customize page for your theme settings, you can see what they look like
over here. Again, this is a very basic page because we haven’t put together our
content or customized our WordPress blog yet. If you ever want to hide the
sidebars so that you can see what the full website looks like, you can click on
the high controls button at the bottom over here and you can also see what the
website looks like on different devices. So you have the icon for PC, the tablet
and the mobile device. So you can check out how it looks, responsive, and all that
stuff. So what I want to do is just quickly go through these tabs just to show you
what some of the options are. We don’t really make any changes to the default
settings for the blog tutorial, since everything looks pretty good. Again, this
is just a demo website but I want you to be able to customize your
website however you want. So the first thing that we’re going to do is
go into the Colors tab. You can go to the General tab and you can see right here
that there are a few different colors that you can change. So you can change the
background color. If you don’t know what this is, you can always just click on
“Select Color” and then just choose the color. And then on the preview screen,
you can see what changes so that you can see what the settings do. If you ever
want to go back to the default settings, there is a button for each of these that
you can click on. So you can see I can just go back to the default settings. You can
change the text color if you want for the text, the heading or the post text. I’m
going to leave everything as is, but if you do make any changes, what you should
do is click on the blue button at the top. So this Publish button is going to save
everything. So whenever you make changes, you want to click on that. So I’m going to go back, and if I go to the
Header tab right here, you can see we have the Site title color. So that’s going to
be this up here. You can see when we hover over it, it turns to this pink color.
That’s because we have the site title hover color. This color right here. So if I want to
change this to purple, you can see that now when I hover over this, it’s going to
change to another color. So what I want to do is just leave it as the default color,
so I’m not going to change anything. But again, you can change the colors over
here if you want. And then same with the Footer background right here. So if you
need to, you can always pause the video. I do go a little fast in the section, because
I don’t really change anything and I just want to kind of give you an overview. So for the Site Title section, you have your
Site Title and your Tagline. We change these in the Settings section, but you can
change them here also. And then if you want to add your logo or the favicon, and
the favicon sometimes shows up on your web browser on the address section or
the tabs, what you can do is just click on “Select logo” and you’ll see this pop up
right here. I’m in my Media Library so I have all of my demo images and this is
my logo right here. But if you want to upload your own logo, what you want to
do is click on “Upload Files” and then click on “Select Files” and then find the logo
that you want to upload and then just do it that way. So if you’re using the demo
content and you want to use the logo, we have this one right here. So we
can just select it and click “Select”. It’s going to ask you to crop this. You can
crop it if you want or you can just skip cropping so that the entire image shows
up. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to click “Skip Cropping”.
Now you’ll see the logo show up here and then on the preview screen, it’s going
to show up up here. You can see that we have the logo in our site title here. If you
want to get rid of the site title, the tagline and all that stuff, I have some code that
you can use. So on the Text Tutorial, and I am jumping a little back and forth,
but I don’t think I’ll confuse you too much, on Step 7: Customize Theme Settings,
down here in the Site Identity section or I think it’s going to be the Header section
or Site Identity, you’re going to see some code right here. This is custom CSS.
If you copy this, and then go back to your customized page here, and we go into
this additional CSS tab and paste that additional CSS from the Text Tutorial in.
What this is going to do is make this disappear. So really quickly, I’m going to
click “Publish” and just show you, and then I’m want to remove this
because I actually liked the site title. So I’m going to close this really quickly.
We’re going to go and check out our WordPress website and we’ll come back
to the Customize page. So I’m going to click on “Visit Site” and I’ll let my
WordPress website load. You can see that all we have here is our logo and the site
title is gone. So if you want to replace the site logo and the site title and you want to
make the site title disappear –sorry if I confused you right there –you want to
put in that code. So I’m going to go back to my customized page because that’s
the only option that you have to get rid of the site title that you see right here.
So I do have that in the Text Tutorial. I’m going to remove this though, because
I want to keep my site title, and I’m going to go back into the Site Identity. I’m
actually going to remove my logo and just keep it really basic with just the Site Title
and Tagline for my WordPress blog because I think it looks pretty good.
It’s really up to you what you want to do though. You can always add your own
logo. And same with the Site Icon. We can go in here and we can go into our
Media Library. Maybe I’ll select my logo again and this time, I will crop this so it’ll
just show the heart, and I’ll “Crop Image”. Now, I’m going to have my favicon show
up on my little tab over here. You can see it has a little preview screen. So it
depends on the web browser that you have. If you do make any changes again,
you want to click on the “Publish” button to save your changes. We can just go
through these other ones really quickly. For Typography, if you want to change
the font style, you can do that right here. The Heading font is what you see here
and up here and then you have your Body font, which is all this other stuff. And then
you have your font sizes, so there’s a bunch of them that you can change.
I’m not going to do anything. I’m going to leave everything as is. I’m not really into
changing stuff if it looks good just to change it. So I think the developers did a
really good job with the typography and a lot of the default setting, so I’m not going
to change anything. For the blog section right here, we’re not going to change
anything either but I did want to go in here just to show you what we have selected,
just in case your settings look a little different. Again, it’s going to look exactly
like the demo WordPress blog website that I showed you in the introduction of
this video tutorial. So if that’s what you want, then you can just follow along with
the settings that we select. We’re not going to do anything with WooCommerce,
and we can come down to the post slider. We’re going to go back into this section
a little bit later after we create our blog posts. The reason why we’re going to do
that is because for our slider, which is going to be up here with our couple of
blog posts that we have, what we can do is select the type of blog posts that we
want to add. So once we add some blog posts, we’re going to be able to create
some categories so we can have some featured blog posts that show up at the
top of our homepage. We can select those ones to just show up. So we’ll come
back in here and do that a little bit later. And then for the pages, we don’t change
anything here, we’re going to leave the title at the top, and then we’re going to
align everything to the center. We don’t have a background image. I don’t think
that looks really good. For our Menus, we’re going to cover this later in the
video tutorial. So we’ll come back for that section. Same with our Widgets, we’re
going to customize our Sidebar that you see here and also the Footer section
towards the end of this video after we create some blog posts and everything. For the Homepage Settings, this is
something that we covered in the Settings section a little bit earlier in this
WordPress tutorial. Again, we’re creating a blog website with WordPress, so we just
need our latest posts. But if you want to have a Homepage and a separate Blog
Posts Page, you want to click on “A static page” and then select the Homepage
and the Blog Post page that you create for those, okay? So we’re not
going to make any changes here. Again, the Additional CSS, the only thing
that you really need to put in here is if you want to hide the site title, so that you can
have your logo with your site title in there. Or if you have any other custom CSS that
a developer gives you or anything that you can add, you can do that here, okay.
So these are the custom options for your Theme Settings. Again, I don’t really
change anything, but you can change stuff on your own. If you need to, you can
pause the video to do that. Just make sure that you click on the “Publish”
button right at the top to save all of your changes. Once that says, “Published’ up
there, then everything’s going to be saved. Before I actually close out of this, I want
to mention one more thing that I just remembered. So you can see we have
our pink links right here on our blog. This color might not work for everyone’s
blog website. So what I want to do is give you some additional CSS that you can use
to customize the link colors, because you don’t have the option in these tabs. So if
you go to the Additional CSS tab right here, and then you go to the Text Tutorial
on the NYC Tech Club website to the step that we’re on, down at the bottom in the
custom CSS section, I’m going to have some code right here that you can copy.
So if I copy all of this, all you have to do is update the color code down here
to adjust the color for your links. So if I paste this in, you’re going to see
all this code. Now you see that these link colors are black, because the color code
down here is black. So you can go and find whatever color codes that you want
for your own blog website. But again, I’m going to update the CSS for this tutorial,
so that this custom CSS covers all the different link colors. If you need some
additional help, you can let me know. So you can always click on the “Publish”
button right here or you can just leave everything as the default, which again
is what I’m doing for my blog website. So now I am actually done, and I’m going
to save everything just to make sure that everything is saved. Now I will close out
of this, and we’ll move on to the next step once you guys are ready. Once you’re
back on the WordPress dashboard, now we’re going to move on to the next
step. So what we’re going to do now is learn how to create some blog posts so
that we can create our content for our blog website. So there’s two ways that
you can go about creating pages and posts. You can hover over “New” at the
top over here and click on “Posts” or on the dashboard right here, you can hover
over “Posts” and you can click on “Add New” to create a new post, but what
I want to do is delete the default WordPress blog post that’s created for
you when you install WordPress first. So I’m going to click on “All Posts” and
that’s going to bring me to the Blog Posts page right here with all of my blog posts
that I’ve created. Again, this one is created by default. So I just want to delete
this one. So I’m going to click on that trash button. So you’ll see a notification
that says that this is going to be deleted. Once the post is removed, now what
we can do is create some blog posts together. So I think what we’ll do in this
video tutorial is we’ll create two blog posts together. It’s going to be really,
really easy. I just want to make sure that you guys know how to do it, and then I’ll
set you free and let you create as many different blog posts as you want. So what
you can do here is click on “Add New” or you can click on “Add New” right here.
It doesn’t matter which one you do, but we’re going to go to the blog post page. Once you’re on the Add New Post page,
this is where you can go to create your blog posts. So what we’re going to do in
this video is show you how to create two different blog posts. And then you can
pause the video and create as many different blog posts as you want. So the
first thing that we’re going to do is add our title right here. So I’ll type in
something like “Exploring New York City”. And then what you can do after you put
in your title is come down here, and this is where you can write every content. The
cool thing about WordPress now is that they have these things called “blocks”
here. So you can click on the “+” button right here and you can add whatever type
of section that you want. So if you want to add a heading, a paragraph or image,
you can do that right here. You can choose any of these other ones also.
You can also just start typing here. You also have some buttons over here.
Just a side note, I do have a video tutorial on how to use WordPress for beginners.
So if you want a more in-depth tutorial on how to use WordPress, I will link you
to that video in the video description. So what I’m going to do is just go into
my notepad right here, and I have some dummy text that I want to copy. I’m just
going to paste that in right here, since this is just a demo blog post. So you can see
I have a bunch of different paragraphs here. And each of these are different
blocks. So if I hover over them, you can see that we have different blocks.
You can always hover over one of them and click in here. You’ll get this little toolbar right here. You can change the type of heading or section that you
have right here. You can delete the block over here. You also have the formatting
options right here. When you click in one of these blocks, you’ll also have this
section over here on the left-hand side where it says, “Block”. You can come in
here and customize the paragraph block. You can change the font size; you can
change the colors. It’s really up to you. What I want to do is just show you a few
different things. So first, if you want to link any of these texts, you can just
highlight the text. And then click on this little link icon right here and then just type
in your URL right here. So we can type in something like “link.com” and this is just
a random link. And then all you have to do is click “Apply”. Now you can see the link
show up right here. You also have the option of going in here and clicking to
open up the link in the new tab if you want. Or if you want to remove this link,
just click on the link and then just click on the icon again, and it’s going to make
it disappear. These other tabs or links should be very straightforward. You can
always hover over them, and you can see what they do. And then down here, what
I want to do is I want to click in here. I want to go into this icon and change this
to a heading. Now you can see that we have some heading options right here to
change the size. Also in the block section over here, we have some additional
settings right here to make it even larger. So you can do whatever you want and just
make sure that you know that if you do click in these different blocks that this
section does change depending on the type of block you have. So what we can
also do is just show you how to add an image. So maybe we’ll go in here and
push “Enter” just to create a new block. I’ll click on this little icon right here to add
an image. I’m going to go into my media library so I’ll click on this. That’s going
to open up the Media Library right here. Maybe we’ll just add one of these random
images so we’ll select this one. I’ll click “Select” right here, and you’ll see that the
image shows up. You can always drag this to make it larger or smaller. Again,
you do have these options over here to edit this image so you can move it around
and all that stuff, okay? So also, you can just delete it if you don’t like it. So that’s
just a quick overview of how to use some of the formatting options and how to add images, headings, and all that stuff for your blog posts. So what I want to do
now is just go into the document tab right here, because you’re going to go into this
section before you actually publish your blog post. If you want, you have the
option right here of making this a front page blog posts and sticking it right to the
top. So I have this other tab right here just to show you what that means. So if I
check this box right here, for “Stick to the Front Page”, what that’s going to do
is put this blog post right up here as the featured posts that you see. So it’s always
going to have your latest posts that you select with this checkbox in that area
right there at the top. So you can see we have these other blog posts. But if you
want a certain one to show up up here, you want to check this box right here.
And then what you can do is come down here if you want to add some category
names or categorize your blog posts, so we can just click on this link right here
and just add “Design” for a category and maybe add “Fashion” also. So what I did
was I just clicked on this link, type in the category name and then just push “Enter”.
And then if you see these check marks right here, that means that this blog post
is going to be categorized by these names right here. You can also do the
same with the tags right here if you want, so we can just type in “Design and then
we can also type in “Fashion” right here. If you want to add a featured image,
you’re just going to click on this button right here. Again, let me just show you on
the demo WordPress website that this is the featured image and then also these
ones for these blog posts right here. So let’s go and add one because it will
make your blog post look a little bit better. So click on “Featured Image”. Again,
if you want to upload your own images, all you’re going to do is just go in to
upload files and click on “Select Files” and find the image that you want to
upload. If you want to use one from the Media Library, and this is the demo text
or demo images. Again, some of these images might not be exactly the same.
Excuse me right there. Some of these images might not be exactly the same
because these ones are copy written, but I will find images that you can use and
you can always replace these images with your own. So what I want to do is just
select this one that we used and click “Select”. Now we have our image here.
And then you can add an excerpt if you want. Otherwise, let’s just going to take
the top few words or sentences up here, depending on your settings. Down here
you have the option of allowing comments. If you want, you can uncheck
this if you don’t want people to leave comments, but we’ll leave that checked
right there. That’s all we have to do to create our blog posts. So once you’re
ready, I’m just going to click on the publish button right here. It’s going to say,
“Are you really ready to publish this?” If you are, go ahead and click on “Publish”
right here once again. Once the blog post is published, you should see a link right
here. So we can go and view the post. So I’m just going to click on this really
quickly. Once we come to the blog post page, you can see right here that we have
our featured image and then we have our title, the category names, and then our
text right here. Down here, we do have our tags also. We’re going to go in and
customize our sidebar a little bit later. So don’t worry about how this looks.
But this is how you create a blog post. So what we can do is just go through this
one more time. Again, just reiterate some of the most important things with the
blog posts, and then I’ll set you free and you can pause the video and create as
many different blog posts as you want. So if you want to do that, let’s just hover
over New right here and click on add new “Post”. Once you’re back on the blog post
page, let’s create another blog post together. So we’ll just type in “Wunderlust
NYC Explorer. And then what I’m going to do is just paste in my demo text right
here. So if you need to, and I’m going a little too fast, because this is just a
second post. So you should already know how to create blog posts. You can always
pause the video. I’m going to come down here and just change this to a Heading
section. Just remember that you do have the settings over here for whatever block
that you’re in. So I can change the headings settings right here. Or if I go into
this paragraph right here, I can change the font size or I can change the colors over
here. So I’m not going to do that for this blog post. And I’m not going to add any
links or images, but you can do that on your own. All I want to do is just go to the
Document tab right here and just remind you that you do have the option right here
of sticking this blog post to your front page. So again, if you check that box,
it’s going to show up right here. If you also want to have certain blog posts
show up in this section, instead of all your most recent posts, such as selecting a
certain category just to show up, so we can just select “Lifestyle” or “Travel” and
then all those blog posts would show up. What you want to do is make sure that
you select the category name right here. So you can also add a category called
“Featured” if you want to have that as the featured section. So maybe that’s what
we’ll do. So I’ll just type in “Featured” right here and push “Enter”. I’ll also select
the “Design” category that I already did. I’ll show you, after I create some
additional blog posts, how you can go back into your Theme Settings and select
the category that you want to populate in the slider section. You don’t need to do
that but it is an option for you. Down here in the Tags section, we can add some
tags. So maybe we’ll type in “design” and “fashion”. And then what we can do is just
dd a featured image right here. So let’s select this, and then we’ll go into our
Media Library and just choose one of these images. So I’ll just use this one right
here and click “Select”. We should see the image show up. And then if you want to
add an Excerpt, if you don’t want to use the default one, you can just type one in
right here. Otherwise, it takes about the first 30 characters. And then at the
bottom, you can disallow or allow comments, so you can let visitors leave
comments if you want. And then once you’re ready, that’s all we have to do.
We have our blog posts, and we can just click on the “Publish” button right here.
It’s going to say, “Are you ready?” and just click “Publish” one more time,
and you’re good to go. So once the blog post is published,
we should see a link right here that says, “View Post” and you can go and view
it if you want. Also, if you go to your Homepage, you should see some blog
posts populating now. But what I’m going to do before I actually show you my
Homepage is I’m going to pause this video and take a little break and actually
create a bunch of different blog posts just so that I have enough content for the
rest of this blog tutorial so that everything populates. So if you want to take a break
and create some blog posts, you can. Go ahead and pause the video and push
“Play” once you’re ready. Otherwise, just keep watching and then we’re going
to move on to the next step. So let me take a break really quickly, and I’ll see you
in just a little bit with a bunch of new blog posts. See you later. Alright, so welcome back. What I did was
I created 13 different blog posts as I paused this video. So if you created some
blog posts, great. If you want to do that later, that’s fine, too. So as you can see
right here, we have some with category names, some with tags. What I want to do
is just show you what the homepage looks like right now. And then we’re going
to go and customize some more settings for the Homepage. So on the blog
website right here, we have our title and then our slider up here with our recent
blog posts. And then down here is our featured blog posts or the sticky one.
It could also just be the most recent one, depending on whether or not you check
that option or not. And then down here we have a bunch of different blog posts.
You can actually set the number of blog posts to show up on each page.
So right now I think there’s either 9 or 10. And then at the bottom of that, you can
see we have links to go to the next page to see some additional blog posts.
So what we’re going to do right now is just go and customize the layout of this
section for our blog posts, and also show you how you can customize the slider
section to make just certain blog posts show up. So if you’re on the Homepage
right here and you’re logged in, what I want you to do is go ahead and click
on the “Customize” button right here. That’s going to bring you to the Theme
options. So you should remember this page because we covered this section
a little bit earlier in this video tutorial. So what I want to do is just go and show
you how you can select which blog posts that you want to show up over here based
on category names. And then we can also go into our settings and set the number of
blog posts to show up on the homepage. So first right here for the slider section,
what I want you to do is just go to where it says post slider and click on that.
In this section right here you should see a category dropdown. If you only want to
make certain blog posts show up based on the category name, you can just select
that category name. So if I selected “Featured” blog posts, then the only posts
that are going to show up are my featured blog posts. And then if you don’t have
more than four, then it might fill up with some other ones. If you do have more
than four, it’s just going to show that category name. So you can also hide this
entire section if you don’t want it. If you do choose a category name to show up
in this section, make sure to click on the “Save” button right here so that you save
your changes. I’m not going to do that because I wanted to show my most
recent posts, but I did want to show you that you do have this option right here.
So what I’m going to do is just go back right here. We actually want to close out
of this. If you want to go and show the number of blog posts that show up in this
section, we’re going to go to our settings section to select the number of blog
posts that show up right here. So I’m going to close out of this. And once
we’re back on the WordPress Dashboard, let’s come down to the Settings and
hover over that. Let’s click on “Reading”. Once we’re on the Reading Settings page,
all you want to do is come down where it says, “Blog pages show at most”. This is
where you can show or select the number of blog posts that you want to show per
page. So I’m going to change it from “10” to “6” just because I think 10 makes you
scroll down a little bit too much. So you can change this if you want. You can
leave it at 10. I just wanted to show you that you do have the option. If you do
make any changes, make sure that you click on the “Save Changes” at the
bottom. And then once you do that, we are good to go. Now we can just move
on to the next step. So now what I want to do is show you how you can edit your
sidebar for your Homepage and your Blog Post pages. So what we’re going to do is
hover over Appearance on the left-hand side and click on “Widgets”. Once you’re
on the Widgets page, the first thing that you might notice is I’m back in this video
and that’s because the microphone battery died on my camera and it just
made it really difficult to line up the audio with the video recording. So if I
disappeared again, you’ll know why. But hopefully the battery is fully charged
now. What we’re going to do on the Widgets page is we’re going to come into
the Sidebar and the Footer section and customize the sidebar and footer for our
blog website. So what I want you to do is go into each widget that you see in this
sidebar right now and just click and expand them and then click “Delete”.
So I can show you how to do this really quickly. Let me go and just add this one right here. When I open this up, you’ll notice that you can expand it and click
“Delete” and that’s going to remove the widget. So I want you to do that for all of
your widgets. And then we’re going to add a few of these. You can add any one that
you want. The one that I want to show you how to use is the Author Profile. So I’ll
click and expand this, and just click on the “Sidebar” and click “Add Widget”. What
you’ll notice is if you actually go into your user profile, so that’s down here on the
lower left, and you add an image and your bio, it’s going to show up in the sidebar.
But the default look looks pretty good also. So I’m going to show you what that
looks like. And then what I want to do is add the “Easy Facebook Likebox. So I’m
going to go in here and just click “Add Widget”. What you want to do once it gets
added right here is you want to change the URL to your business page or your fan
page. So you want to make sure that you have a business or fan page because you
can’t add your regular profile, since you can’t like that page or follow it. So you can
see right here, this is the NYC Tech Club URL, and I do have the slash at the end.
Sometimes you need to add that in order to make this widget show up. I want to
change the width to 350 so that it’s wide enough. And then you can select
whatever you want here. I’m going to leave everything as the default, so I’ll just
click “Save” right here. And then we’re going to close this. And now what I
want to do is add the Cali Sidebar posts. I’m just going to drag this in just to make
it a little bit easier. We don’t really need to change anything here. So those are the
widgets that I’m going to add. Let’s add one more: the MailChimp Signup form.
This is another plugin that we installed earlier. But we have to go and connect our
MailChimp account with this widget and our blog website. So if you have a
MailChimp account, I want you to go and login. If you don’t have one, then you want
to go to mailchimp.com and create one. Or you can just not use this widget if you
don’t want the newsletter optin form. But because we want to save these
emails that people are signing up with, we need to integrate this with MailChimp.
So what we can do is right here, if you have this widget, it has a link right here
to go to our settings for this plugin. So we want to click on this to open up a
new tab. That’s going to bring us to the plugin page right here. The first thing
that you want to do is create a form. So you can see right here I created one
called blog. So go ahead and do that. Once you do, you’re going to see this page
right here. You can see a preview of your signup form right here that’s going to
show up on the sidebar, and we have some code here that we can customize to
make this. So if you need to, you can go to the Text Tutorial on this step right here.
I do have some code, you can copy it, and then just go back to the Plugin
Settings and paste that in right here just to make sure that it looks like this,
and then click “Save Changes”. Once you do that, after everything is
saved, what we’re going to do is go to the MailChimp tab right here on the left-hand
side under MailChimp for WP. We’re going to go and integrate our MailChimp
account. So right here in the General Settings, what you want to do is paste
in an API key that you get from your MailChimp account. So I have a tab open
with my MailChimp account right here. Once I logged in, I went to my profile.
And then on this page, I clicked on “Extra” and then click on “API”. If I scroll down
here, you’ll see a button that says, “Create A Key”. Go ahead and click on that.
And you’re going to create an API key right here. I want you to copy that and
then go back into your settings and just paste that in right here, and then click
“Save Changes”. And once everything is saved, what you’re going to notice is that
you’re going to have a list of all of your MailChimp list right here. So now what we
can do is go back to our Form page right here. So click on the form link. And then
we can select the list that we want to save the emails that we get into. So we’re
going to go to the Settings tab right here. You should see a list of all your
MailChimp list right here. I’m going to select this one called, “NYC TECH CLUB
Newsletter. So that’s where every email that I get is going to get saved. I’m just
going to click “Save Changes” right here. That’s pretty much all you have to do.
So that’s going to connect your MailChimp account with your email list.
So whenever someone signs up for your newsletter, they’re going to opt in to that
form. So I’m going to close those tabs right here. That’s pretty much all we have
to do. Those are the widgets that I’m going to add to my sidebar. And then
what I want to do is show you how you can add some widgets to your footer.
So I want to add my Instagram widget. So I’m going to come down here and just
find this one and scroll down and click “Add Widget”. Oops, I actually added it to
the sidebar. So I’m going to drag this to the Footer Instagram section over here.
I’ll open this up, and we can customize this. So we can just say, “Follow at
Instagram”. And then what you want to do is type in your username right here. So I’ll
type in “nyctechclub”. And then you can change the number of photos that you
want. So maybe I’ll go with six photos. You can also change the size of these
photos if you wanted to. So I don’t know which is the best option, but I’m going to
go with “Small” right here, but if it doesn’t look good, then I’ll just change it on my
own. I’m going to delete the “follow me” link because it doesn’t actually look that
good. So I’m going to click “Save” right here. And then the last thing that we can
do is add the “Cali Social Icons”. This is going to look really cool after we create
the social media widget menu. It’s not going to look good right now. You can see
that you do have to create a menu for this section to show up. So we’ll come back
into this section to make sure that the social icons populate correctly, or if we
need to swap out this widget a little bit later when we create our menus. So this
should be saved too. That’s all you have to do to create your widgets. So we are
pretty much done with this section. Everything isn’t going to look perfect right
now. You can always come back in here and customize this stuff later. Let’s just
go and check out what the blog sidebar and footer Instagram looks like now. So
I’m going to hover over my website name and click on “Visit Site”. Once the Home
Page loads, if we scroll down a little bit, you should see your sidebar right here.
This is the author profile. So if you add an image and a bio in your username or
the user profile, it’ll show up right here. It looks pretty cool. So that’s why I wanted
to show you it. And then we have our Facebook Likebox, our recent posts right
here, and then our email opt in form that’s going to be connected to MailChimp. At
the bottom, if we scroll down down here, you should see the Instagram section.
It actually doesn’t look that good. So if I hover over this, you can see that we have
our text and all that stuff. So don’t worry about that. But you can see there’s a line
in between this. So what I’m going to do is go back in and customize this a little
bit more. So I’m going to hover over my website name, and then go back to the
widgets. The great thing about WordPress is you can always go and edit this stuff.
So we’re going to go back into the Footer section, into the Footer Instagram, and
delete the title. And then for the link text, I am going to put back in the “Follow me”
and just click “Save”. Now, it should look a lot better. So I’m going to go back to my
Homepage one more time, and just show you at the bottom over here that we
should see this now. So we got rid of that line that says, “Follow at Instagram”.
So when you hover over this, now it says, “Follow Me” and that looks a lot better. So I’m pretty happy with how this looks
right now. If you are, then we are good to go. We’re going to go and talk about the
menu stuff a little bit later, but right now what I want to do is show you how to
create some pages. So we’re going to do the About page, the Contact page, and
then maybe an Image Gallery. So if you want to do that, let’s move on to the next
step. So what we’re going to do is go and create a page. So hover over “New” and
click on “Page”. Once you’re on the Add New Page, creating a page is really easy.
So I think we’re going to create an About page, a Contact page, and I’ll also
show you how to create a Gallery page. We’re going to do all of that in this section
right here. So the first thing I want to do is create the About page. So I’ll just put in
the page title right here, and I want to add an image. So I’m going to click on this
icon right here and click on “Media Library”. You can always customize your
page however you want, so you don’t need to do exactly what I’m doing. If you
want to upload your own images, click on “Upload Files” and click on “Select Files”.
We’re going to go to the Media Library and just select this image right here.
Again, these images might not be exactly the same because they are copy written.
But I will find images that you can use and you can always replace them
whenever you want. So we have our image inserted right here. We can click
and drag this to make it larger if we want. If you hear some noise outside, there’s
some sirens right now, there’s a storm going on. It’s spring, but you never know
with New York City. Okay, so we have our image right here. Let’s come down here,
and we’re just going to paste in some text. So I’m going to paste in some demo
texts. This is from my demo website. You can see that it’s already formatted
with a link, also a quote, some bold text, and a list. So your About page can be
about you, it can be about your blog, it can be about your story, whatever you
want. If you need some time, you can pause this video and type out your About
section. You can also come into each of these different blocks and customize
everything with the settings. So just click wherever your mouse is, and then it’s
going to let you format the block however you want. And then once you’re ready,
go to the document tab. What I want to do is just show you that down here in the
Page Attributes, you do have different template options. So the Default template
is going to be the one that looks just like your blog posts where you have a sidebar
and the content section. The Full Width is just going to be a full with page with no sidebar, and I’ll show you how to use this one with our image gallery. And then
you have the Narrow section or Narrow option without a sidebar, so it’s just going
to put the content in the middle, but without the sidebar. So we’re going
to go with the default option right here. All we’re going to do is just publish this.
So I’m going to click on “Publish”, and click “Publish” one more time. That’s going
to create our page. Now we can go and check it out. So I’m going to click on
“View Page”. Once the page loads, this is the About page and you can see we have
our page title at the top, our featured image, and then our content section right
here all formatted. I’m pretty happy with how this looks. I did get rid of my profile
section over here on the right-hand side of the sidebar, because it didn’t have
an image or a bio. So it looks a little bit better without it right now. So this is
the About page. If you need to, you can always customize yours however you
want. So if you want, you can pause the video and create some additional pages or keep watching because now what we’re going to do is show you how to
create an image gallery. So I’m going to hover over new and click on “Page”. Once you’re on the “Add New” page, we’re going to go and put in the page title. So I’ll type
in “Gallery”. And then in this first section right here, you should see this icon that
says, “Add Gallery”. If you don’t, go ahead and click on the “+” button and then click
on the gallery icon right here. I’m going to go to my Media Library, and I’m just going
to select some images, but you can always upload your own. So I’m going to
select a few of these. Let me count how many I have: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Maybe we’ll
add two more. So I’ll have eight images in total, and I’ll click “Create Gallery”.
What you can do here is you can drag these around if you want to rearrange
these and you can add a caption if you want. And then just click on “Insert
Gallery”. Right here, this is an entire block. So you can see in these settings right here that you can change the number of columns that you have per row. You can
also crop these image and you can link these to the attachment page or to a new
page or you can do none. For this tutorial, I’m going to choose “None”. If you
downloaded a plugin like a Likebox, then you can get these to just pop up
on your page. Maybe, I’ll make a video tutorial on how to do that, but with the
current page builder, we have these options right here. So I’m going to go with
none. That’s pretty much all we have to do to create our gallery. So I want to go to
the Document tab and just show you in the Page Attributes, you do have these
template options. So you have the Default setting, which is the sidebar, the Full
Width option, so there’s no sidebar and then the Narrow option. So it’s not a full
width page, but a narrow page without the sidebar. So I’m going to choose the “Full
Width” option. So that’s going to get rid of the sidebar and just focus on these
images. And then you can click on the “Publish” button and click on it twice,
just to publish the page and that’s all we have to do. So let me show you what the
page looks like by clicking on “View Page”. Once the page loads, you can see
we have our title right here and then we have our images right here. Again, you
can crop these images. This looks really good to me. Once the gallery loads,
you can see we have our page title and then all of our images right here. Again,
I don’t link these to any other page, so you can just see them right here. It looks
really good to me. So that’s how you create an Image Gallery. I don’t know if I’m going to keep this on the header menu, but if you want a gallery for your blog
posts, that’s all you have to do. If you want these to pop up on the page by
clicking on them, then let me know in the comments section and maybe I’ll make a video tutorial on how to do that. So the last page that we’re going to learn
how to make in this WordPress blog tutorial is the Contact Us page. So if you
want to do that with a contact form and everything, go ahead and hover over New
and click on “Page”, and we’ll go and create that page together. Once you’re
back on the Add New page, let’s type in a page title. So we’ll type in “Contact”, and I
want to add an image. So I’m going to click on this button right here and go to
my Media Library. You can always upload your own images. We’re going to select
this image right here, and just click “Select”. I’m going to drag this out to
make it a little bit larger. It doesn’t really matter how far you drag it, because I’m
going to scale it all the way to the side of the sidebar. So you’ll see what I’m talking
about once we show you what the page looks like. So I’ll leave the caption blank.
And then I’m going to come in here and just add some demo text. So I’m going to
go to my notes page and just copy this text that I have right here. So you can
always pause the video and add whatever text that you want. So I have my image,
my text, and I don’t need to do any formatting for the block. Everything is
good over here because I want to leave the default template. So what I want to do
is go and customize a contact form so that we can use it and paste in the short
code at the bottom over here to make the contact form populate, so your visitors
can contact you. So what I’m going to do is just save this really quickly. So I’m
going to click on the “Save” button right here. And then what I want to do is I’m
going to come back to this page in just a few minutes. Let’s hover over Contact.
This is, I believe, a plugin that we installed a little bit earlier, and let’s click on “Contact Forms”. Once you’re on the Contact Forms page, you should see a
contact form already created for you. What we’re going to do is take the short
code and paste it into our Contact page to make the contact form populate. But first,
what I want to do is just edit the contact form. So let’s click on the “Edit” link right
here. It should bring us to the Contact Form. I want you to be on the Form tab
right here, and then go to the Text Tutorial, and at the step where we’re
creating the pages, which right now is Step 11, I have some code right here,
and I want you to copy all of this. So you should see the “

to the closed “p>”
right here. You’re going to copy that and then go into this section right here
and delete this code and paste that in. That’s going to format your contact form
to look like the demo website. Once you do that, you can click the “Save” button or
what you can do is go into the Mail tab. You can change the email address where
the messages are going to be sent once your visitors send you a message. So
right now, they’re going to be sent to this email. But if you ever want to change that,
go ahead and do that. And then once you’re ready, click on the “Save” button,
and that’s going to save your contact form. And then what we’re going to do is
go and get our short code. So you should see the short code right here. So let me
just try to highlight this really quickly. It’s also going to be on the main Contact
Form page. So highlight the contact form short code right here, and copy that.
Now let’s go back to our Contact page. So hover over Pages and click on “All
Pages”. Once you’re back on the Pages page right here, find the Contact page
and click on the “Edit” button. Once you’re back on this page right here, just paste
in the short code wherever you want to place the contact form. So I’m going to
paste it in right here. You can see that it gets pasted in as some short code, and
that’s what you want. That’s all we have to do to make our Contact Form show up
at the bottom over here. So once you’re ready, if you want to go to the Document
tab, you can always change the template. We’re going to use the Default option.
So all I want to do is just “Publish” this and then we are done creating our
contact form. So once this saves, we can go and check it out by clicking on “View
Page”. Once you see the Contact page right here, we should see our page title at
the top and then our featured image and some text right here and then our Contact
Form that we just created right here. So now your visitors can leave you a
message and it’ll get sent right to your inbox. So you can customize your contact
form however you want. We have just learned how to create all of our different
pages for our WordPress blog website. Now we can actually move on to the next
step. So what we’re going to do next is we’re going to learn how to create and
customize our Header menus at the top, and also our Footer menu at the bottom
down here. We can also add some social media buttons over here. So if you want
to learn how to do that, keep watching and we’re going to move on to the next
step. So now what we’re going to do is learn how to customize our menus.
So I want you to hover over your website name, and we can just go to the menus
page by clicking on “Menus”. Once you’re on the Menus page, the first thing we’re
going to do is create our Header menu. So right here where it says, “Menu Name”,
go ahead and type in “Header” and then click on the button that says, “Create
Menu”. Once the header menu is created, come to where it says, “Display
Locations” and check the “Primary” box to make this the primary menu that
shows up on all your pages. And then what we can do is add our pages or
links that we want to our header menu. So I want to add these three pages that I
created. So I’m going to check the boxes and click “Add to Menu”. You should see
the items show up right here. What you can do is drag these around to reorder
them. You can also indent these if you want to make this item a sub menu item
of the one above it. So that’s really up to you. And then what I want to do is create
a custom link for the Homepage. So I’ll come in here and just type in my domain
name right here. So I’ll type in “theyogayoga.com”. I’ve got to make sure
I spell it right. For the Link Text, I’ll type in “Home” right here. You can also add
some category names for your blog posts. So if you want to have links to
certain types of blog posts, you can come in here and you can just check the boxes
for whatever categories that you want to show up. So maybe we’ll just put travel.
So that’s going to show up over here on this right-hand side, and I’ll just move it to
maybe right here. That’s all we have to do to create our header menu. So you can
always create any custom links or add any other links that you want. And then
once you’re ready, click on the “Save Menu” button. Once the menu is created,
now what we’re going to do is create our other menus. So first, let’s create the
Footer menu. So let’s click on the link that says “create a new menu” once again. Once we’re back on this page, let’s just type in “Footer” and click on “Create
Menu”. Again, what you’re going to do is come to where it says, “Display location”
and this time check the “Footer” link. You can add whatever items that you
want to your footer menu. So I’m pretty much going to add the same ones. So it’s
going to be kind of repetitive of what I just did. So I’m going to add the pages,
and then just type in my URL right here. Hopefully, I spell it right this time.
The Link text is going to say, “Home” right here. You can always go in and click
to open these up and you can change the Navigation labels” if you want. I’ll also
add the lifestyle or “Travel” category also. I’m going to rearrange these once they all
get added right here. So we’ll move the Home to the top, Contact” to the bottom,
“Travel” to the middle and then the “About” right over here. Once you’re ready,
go ahead and click on “Save Menu” again. Once the menu is saved, now what I want
to do is I want to add a social media menu at the bottom of the footer section.
You can also do this for the header area. So I’m going to click and “Create a new
menu”. Once you’re on this page, again remember that you can create a social
media header menu also, but we’re creating the social media menu for the
footer, so we’re going to select this option. All you have to do is come into the
custom links and type in the URLs for your different social media pages. Once
you do, the icons will populate for your links. So we’ll type in “Facebook” right
here, if I can spell it correctly. You do need to make sure that you spell these icons
correctly or these URLs correctly in order for the icons to populate. So for the Link
text, I typed in “Facebook” right there. And then for the second one, I’ll type in
“twitter.com/nyctechclub”. You can always add me on these different
platforms. I also have social media platforms or accounts for my own
personal account: Jameson Kang. Go ahead and find me there. It’d be great
to interact with you guys. So we’ll do you “YouTube” right now. I am starting my
own YouTube channel without NYC Tech Club. So again, I’m just kind of like
pitching you guys as I write out these URLs, but feel free to find me, add me,
let me know how you guys like these tutorials. The last thing that we’re going
to add is Instagram right here, “nyctechclub”. You can also add me on
NYC Tech Club. If I can spell it correctly. That one took a little while. So Instagram
right here, and click “Add to Menu”. Now we have everything that we need.
All we have to do, once you’re ready, you can rearrange these, you can add
more, click “Save Menu” so that we save this. We have just learned how to create
our different types of menus. So in this drop down, you should have the Header,
the Footer and then the Social Footer right here. So we have just learned how
to create everything that we need for our blog website with WordPress. I want to
show you what the homepage looks like now that we have our custom menus,
and pretty much, I’m going to send you on your way. So let’s hover over our
website name and click on “Visit Site”. Once your Homepage loads, now you
should see the Header menu right at the top and if we scroll down, we should see
our social media buttons down here. We should see our footer menu down
here also. So pretty much, like I said, we have just learned how to create our
own blog website with WordPress. You learned how to create a bunch of
different types of pages and posts and create your own header menus and footer
menus, customize your sidebar and go into your theme settings. So I want to be
the first to say, “Congratulations on learning how to make your own blog
website with WordPress”. I want to just go back and flip the camera back
on me and give you some parting words. But if you don’t want to watch that, I want
to say, “Congrats again for learning how to watch your own” And once the homepage loads,
you should see the header menu right at the top. And if we scroll down to the
bottom, we should see our social media buttons down here, and then our footer
menu down here. So pretty much again, like I said, you have just learned how
to create your own blog website with WordPress. You learned how to create
pages and posts, how to customize your sidebar and create custom menus and
also how to go into your theme settings and set the settings for your own
WordPress website. So I want to say, “Congratulations on learning how to

just give you some final words Once the homepage loads, we should see the header menu right at the top and if we scroll down, we should see our
social media buttons at the bottom right over here and also our footer menu down
here. So pretty much like I said, you have just completed this video tutorial on how
