Hello! We’re from the
Charlie Chaplin Elementary School and we’re doing
a “Palace Reporter” project and wanted to ask you if you might know something
about the Berlin Palace. What do you know about the Palace? Which palace?
– The Berlin Palace. The Berlin Palace…
– No, the Humboldt Palace. HUMBOLDT VON FORUM
Children explore When was the Palace built? This is a question I’d have to answer
in a two-hour lecture. But that would take too long. It’s so scary! Very, very few things remain
of the old Palace ruins. And what did I find
in that old Palace? A lock.
– A lock. Have you ever heard of Lithuania? They did the same thing as here
in Berlin. It was a gigantic palace. And what happened to it?
– It was destroyed. It was completely destroyed. Afterward,
they decided to rebuild it. There is a huge palace in Paris
that wasn’t destroyed. What’s in there now? Is there still a King in France?
– A museum? Right, a museum! I can tell
you’ve understood how it goes. Palaces are either torn down
or turned into museums. Hello! Is this our new generation
of construction workers? I think it’ll be finished
when you’re grown up. You saw the magnificent entrance,
where the figures stood up above. Those are all gods. Which means that a man, or a person, who puts the gods of antiquity on
his house is equating himself to them. He says: “I’m like God, too.” My God,
these statues are really good! It’s called “Humboldt Forum” because of
the two Humboldt brothers. And “Forum”, because the whole area was called a forum. I have a different answer. So, it’s called the “Humboldt Forum” because the Humboldt brothers
used to… One of them – Wilhelm –
studied languages and Alexander
studied other countries. That’s why it was named after them. And “Forum”,
because it’s like a big… I know! like a big center… Such a long answer!
– It wasn’t long. In Ancient Rome, 2.000 years ago, our big malls were called a “forum”. That’s where the shops
and temples were. All citizens met in the forum. And we hope that the people
of Berlin and from around the world will meet here to talk to one another
and discover a bit of the world. That’s why it’s the “Forum”. This is my own collection. May we touch them?
– Yes, you may. Put that aside for now,
we’ll talk about it in a bit. This is ivory.
– Ivory? It’s made of elephant…
mammoth bones. I’ll hold pieces up and you decide
where it should go. Nature, art…
– Nature! Nature?
– Show me. What’s this here?
– What is this? Where does it come from?
– Art. Ah, good job!
What is this? Nature!
-Art! – Foreign! Look at that, you’re building
a little collection already! That’s exactly what we do.
We build little collections and big collections, consisting of
small and large objects with which we want to come up with questions
and put it on display. Thanks! So there were two brothers. They were really smart,
which everyone knew. That’s why
they called it the “Humboldt Forum”. It’s a forum because people
exchange ideas there.
