Improve Your Existing Blog Posts for Better SEO (Using Google Analytics & Google Search Console)

Hey everybody!
Eagan here from Get Found Madison. I want to talk about how we identify blog
opportunities when we’ve already been blogging. So for me this was well over a
year ago. Customers were asking me, “Hey I want to ask my clients or customers for
Google reviews, what’s a good template to use?” So this is something I sent to a
client and I said, “Hey this is probably useful for other people. Why don’t I
throw it up [on my blog]? It wasn’t a big deal I just made a blog post. Well, now it is my top
ranking blog post. I can see that in my Google Analytics here. So if I go into
Google Analytics I go under Behavior>Landing Pages, and at the top I can
segment just by organic traffic. And I can see that “email templates google
reviews” is getting way more traffic than even my homepage or anything else.
What I can also see here is that I’ve got another one where I know basically
we said, “Hey, if you want to create a link so you can send people right to your
Google page,” that’s a separate post. And right away I know, “hey I could make an
even bigger and better post if I combine these and just to look at this again
when I go into Google Search Console, (which is sort of like Google Analytics
but it’s before people get to your site) I can go into Search Traffic>Search
Analytics. I want to see clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and position. I can see all the queries in the last month or I can set the date
range here and I can see that Google review template customer review template
email template asking for reviews Google review email template how to ask for a
Google review these are all things that people are googling and finding us for
I’m using the keywords everywhere Chrome extensions so I see you the Adwords
estimates and what’s particularly interesting here is that say for Google
review template if I just did keyword research in Google’s keyword planner
they would tell me 30 people a month Google for that but that’s backwards
looking an average over the last 12 months. I can see over the last 28 days
I got 148 impressions for this phrase so just like your stocks and your portfolio
or whatever are backward-looking they’re gonna see you’re gonna see earnings for
the previous year a quarter same story with keyword research Google search
console gives us a hint of the future hey times are changing people are
googling this even more than they used to
ditto with our local SEO checklist which is
on the first page of Google nationally when people google for that phrase you
know google adwords keyword planner says only 320 month but i can see it’s more
than twice that amount so it’s really valuable to look in Google search
console and identify opportunities you can look at your pages as well here and
right here I can see yep we’ve got that email template page is our number one
we’ve got basically 754 clicks out of that and our home page is way down here
so it’s after you’ve been blogging for a while and your website’s been out there
it should really be your blog posts that are driving the most organic traffic to
you this one here is the accelerated mobile version of the page and then a
ways down the list I can see I’ve got this minor one showing you had a link so
that’s an idea of I’m gonna combine them and make them even better I’m also gonna
look over this list of queries to get a sense of what else could I be optimizing
for that I’m not currently so I need to review this whole list if you’ve got a
paid tool you can use something like SEM rush plug in the URL get some more ideas
here but otherwise it’s free to use Google search console you just go in and
verify it and say yep this is indeed my site
give me the search data for it so I go through and I copy this I just highlight
it I go all the way down the list and then I put it into a spreadsheet that I
can look at and when I filter the spreadsheet in this case the keyword is
review I get so many more ideas excuse me and I can see that just for Google
review template customer email review etc let’s go buy the most impressions
maybe I can see that email template asking for reviews it gives me an idea
of maybe I’m not just want to write about Google reviews I want to write
about in general how do we ask for customer client reviews asking for a
template review some of these mentioned Google’s some don’t but that could be
another idea as we beef up the blog post we make it one monster 1 and we write
about how do you ask for Yelp reviews how do you ask for facebook reviews how
do you ask for just general online reviews these are all things we could do
to beef up that blog post so it ranks higher for these phrases we can see the
average position right here that Google that Google clocked it in at but we
could also just rank for more phrases overall and bring in even more search
engine traffic it’s ok if those people are not local or say I’m a local
business I only serve local people it’s still well
come to have visitors come to your site Google sees those people spend time on
site some of them go and read other things on
your page some people join your email list etc but I think that’s always
valuable this be earning organic traffic whenever you can so even though you’re a
local business you should be trying to write resources they’ve become guides to
people all over the country and potentially even all over the world and
that will benefit your local SEO as well I strongly believe that so that’s why
I’m doing this I wanted to show we’re gonna we’re gonna beef up this blog post
we’re gonna hit on some of these other topics we’re gonna combine the two that
we’re really separate and a little shorter we’re just going to go longer
longer longer and see can we go up the rank on some of these searches and can
we rank for more searches so right now Google review template I can see I’m
number two potentially if we optimize even more we could become number one for
this and we could keep going up up up up up for all these different keyword
phrases hope this is helpful so basically to do it for yourself go
into your Google Analytics go to behavior landing pages and then segment
segments buy organic traffic just to see where you’re getting traffic and maybe
you could double down and get some more and then when you’re in Google search
console go to search traffic search analytics make sure you’ve seen your
clicks impressions click-through rate and see where do we have the potential
to earn some more and how do we optimize to climb up
