Kurt Oatway | Defeat to Victory | Samsung Paralympic Blogger | PyeongChang 2018

Hello, Kurt Oatway here, Samsung Blogger and
I just want to take a moment to talk about obstacles that you can encounter when competing
at such a high level, such as the Paralympics. The day before yesterday, I was competing
in the downhill event and had a crushing disappointment of a result. I had a huge mistake up top which
caused me to lose all my speed and I went from being plus .3 seconds to being plus 3.3
seconds which resulted in me losing a podium and finishing a, at least for me, a very disappointing
eighth place. It was crushing, it was probably one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had
in my competitive racing career. And I lived with that moment for a second. I thought about
it and reflected on it. It’s one race, there’s another race tomorrow and if I let this one
failure determine how I’m going to compete going forward, then there’s no point being
here. So I accepted it, I moved past it and the following day, in the super G, I laid
down one of the best results of my life. I won the super G by over a second, ahead of
second place and in the skiing world that’s a huge, huge result and I just wanna say that
no matter how dark it gets, there’s always a little bit of sun on the horizon.
