Lower Blood Sugar After Eating Breakfast. Are Your Blood Glucose Levels Normal?

going on here I thought blood sugar was supposed to go up after you eat let
typically what happens but people with insulin resistance working on reversing
that insulin resistance can see some really strange and paradoxical blood
sugar readings so today we’re going to talk about that and sort it all out so
that you know if you need to worry about this or not coming right up hey I’m dr. Ekberg I’m a holistic doctor
and a former Olympic decathlete and if you’d like to truly master health by
understanding how the body really works make sure you subscribe and hit that
notification bell so that you don’t miss anything some people experience a drop
in blood sugar a couple of hours after they eat so we’re going to talk about
that real quick first they eat something the blood sugar goes really high because
they ate some high carbohydrate meal their body makes a bunch of insulin
because insulin is needed to guide that glucose the blood sugar out of the
bloodstream and into the cell and there’s a whole lot of insulin to deal
with that high blood sugar emergency so because of that large amount of insulin
blood sugar drops very very fast and oftentimes it results it overshoots and
it drops too low that’s called reactive hypoglycemia
hypoglycemia is when your blood sugar is too low and it’s called reactive because
it’s in response it’s reacting to the very high blood sugar that was there
before so this typically happens when people eat frequent meals when they eat
a lot of carbs and they have pushed their body into losing the ability to
regulate blood sugar they have dis glycemia their bodies don’t know how to
maintain blood sugar and these people they need to top off their blood sugar
every couple of hours this is typically caused by high carb diets
quint meals and what happens is every time the blood sugar is low peep these
people feel terrible they lose focus they’re irritable they’re tired they’re
nauseous they can’t focus and every time the blood sugar is low their bodies have
to make cortisol so this also results in a stress response it’s wearing on their
adrenal glands and it’s really not a good thing so what do you do you even
out your blood sugar over time by adopting a low-carb high-fat diet with
fewer meals to give your body a chance to learn how to use fuel properly again
but the main thing we want to talk about today is the paradoxical response that
people are noticing that blood sugar stays high and then it drops immediately
after eating so this is based it’s related to something called dawn
phenomenon that we did a video on recently and this is a totally natural
phenomenon it means that during the night your body the blood sugar stays
relatively low and during the night when you don’t eat anything your body
generates blood sugar through a hormone called cortisol cortisol stimulates the
liver to release glucose from glycogen and therefore the cortisol rises
gradually throughout the night to maintain blood sugar but you need a
little extra boost to get out of bed in the morning so right before you wake up
there is a spike there’s a peak of cortisol and growth hormone and glucagon
so that you get that little extra jolt to wake up to the cortisol increases
blood sugar the cortisol turns off the melatonin which is your sleep hormone
and as a result it’s perfectly normal everyone has a little bit of a dawn
phenomenon your blood sugar should rise just a little bit however if your
insulin resistant then that little rise in blood sugar become
a bigger rice because your cells are resistant to the glucose and the insulin
so the more insulin resistance you are the greater the fluctuations the greater
the magnitude of that dawn phenomenon so a lot of people watch that video and
they said yeah yeah great video I get it but I’m still worried because I’m doing
this fasting I’ve been going for three days or seven days and my blood sugar
still is just at a solid 170 hundred and eighty what’s going on here and even
more confusing to them is that it stays at 180 until they eat and as soon as
they eat it drops not two hours later like here but within minutes so this
happens primarily to people who are type 2 diabetics or who are highly insulin
resistant and here’s what’s happening so remember we talked about how much blood
sugar there actually is in the blood okay so if you’re writing at about a
hundred and eighty then there’s roughly nine grams of glucose in the blood but
then part of that is actually solid red blood cells so we have to subtract
approximately forty percent from that because the sugar is dissolved in the
liquid so if we have a blood sugar of a hundred and eighty we have somewhere
around five point four grams of actual blood sugar so the body senses how much
blood sugar is in the system as a whole it’s maintaining a certain level and the
cells are resistant but there’s no need there’s only a teaspoon of sugar
floating around so the body doesn’t have to do anything about it it’s not a
threat it’s not an emergency there is not a whole bunch of fuel or sugar
coming into the body so even though the blood sugar rides at a hundred and
80 the body doesn’t increase insulin productions it’s happy it’s content it
feels it has things under control it’s waiting for the cells to become less
insulin resistant and then what happens as soon as you eat something then the
blood sugar drops maybe it drops into a normal level maybe it drops to a hundred
and forty or so but the point is it drops from where it was sitting and it
happens within minutes or maybe 20 30 minutes from eating so anytime that you
eat you produce insulin insulin is a nutrient sensor it’s a storage hormone
it doesn’t matter what you eat you will produce insulin
now carbs produce a lot of insulin they stimulate a lot of insulin protein
stimulate a moderate a low to moderate amount and fat stimulates a very very
small amount of insulin but it still produces insulin so if you eat a
low-carb diet where primarily fat and protein then you’re going to stimulate
some insulin but you’re not adding any new carbs to the system so you’re on the
right track but that little bit of insulin that you produce is enough to
bring the blood sugar down because you didn’t add any new carbs you haven’t
loaded up your system with a lot of new carbs we want to think about this and
understand what’s going on that when you eat something that food whether it has 5
grams of carbs or a hundred grams of carbs it has to go through the blood
into the cell just because you eat something doesn’t mean it’s actually
inside your body it’s inside your digestive tract it has to be absorbed
into the bloodstream and the blood has to deliver it to the cell and the
bloodstream can only hold about a teaspoon of sugar at a time
so if you eat 5 grams of sugar 5 grams of carbs it’s no big deal it makes a
little bit of insulin and that gets into the blood it gets into the cell but if
you eat a hundred grams now that food that carbs have to get into the blood
and then it has to pass through the blood very very quickly because there’s
more carbs coming but if you’re on a low-carb diet there’s no emergency you
are just making a little bit of insulin so you’re not making your insulin
resistance worse but it’s enough to lower your blood sugar so in other words
there’s nothing to worry about here you’re going in the right direction just
to illustrate with this with with an example I had a patient come in and he
was very very pressure to take medication they wanted him on both
metformin and insulin and he says I’ve had it with drugs I don’t want to take
that stuff I want to do something about this and he was very very highly
motivated says blood sugar was over 300 when he started so he went straight into
a mostly water fast he had some bone broth and and water and
coffee and tea and so forth but basically no nutrients except a little
bit in the in the broth and in about a week’s time his blood sugar went from
300 to 170 and then it just sort of sat there and he was still being pressure he
told the doctors and say hey it’s gone from 300 to 170 and he said I’m on the
right track aren’t I and they said no it’s still too high and what I wanted to
him to understand was that if it goes from 300 to 170 you’re on the right
track but that hundred and seventy represents a very very small amount of
blood sugar there is hardly any carbohydrate in the system and with such
a low level of carbon great the cells are burning through
existing fuel stores and you’re reversing the insulin resistance you are
slowly turning the cells around you’re getting them ready for new fuel but it’s
gonna take a good while so then as soon as he had some bone broth it dropped to
140 and this proves the point that this was not an emergency a tiny tiny bit of
insulin brought it down because there was essentially no new food there’s a
tiny tiny bit of food added but no significant amount of food added to the
system so his body continues to become more insulin sensitive despite the
seemingly high blood sugar so even though his blood sugar was a hundred and
seventy which seems like still a high blood sugar which it is that 170 is a
whole lot better it represents relative to the 300 it represents a whole lot
more progress than the number itself indicates this is one of the most common
questions that I’ve gotten after that dawn phenomenon video so I hope this

  2. I’ve been working on my insulin resistance for 18 months. When I started tracking my morning fasting sugar would be 110 sometimes higher. Last week I had my first numbers in the 80’s upon waking. But these number so inconsistent right now I still had some morning numbers in the 90’s and even low 100’s but over all my average last week for all my finger sticks was 96. I’ve heard it could take several years to clean out the liver and reduce insulin resistance especially at age 59

  3. great video… I am a T2 and I do have the dawn effect .. unfortunately, because of the dawn effect, it does affect my A1C. the dawn effect doesn't lower my a1c. My a1c is around 5.7- 5-9.. so having high blood sugars in the morning for some hours, calculates my a1c to be higher then if I didn't have the dawn effect at all. thanks, Gina

  5. Ive noticed my sugar goes up 30 or 40 points if i drink a couple cups of black coffee in the morning. No sugar or cream in the coffee. I’m guessing the caffeine is doing something to my liver. I’m not on insulin.

  7. I’ve been watching and testing BS every hour after eating. I eat Keto. So one hour after breakfast bs is around 115. 5 hours later it’s only gone down to 105-103. I can’t get it down under 100. Yesterday I went 8 hours without eating and it was still 103. Is it safe to stay above these numbers for long periods?

  8. With the dawn phenomenon perhaps its best to lift weights/workout first thing in the morning fasted? Increased HGH for muscle growth and blood sugar to burn. Low fasted insulin levels to encourage burning body stores of glycogen and fat.

  9. Thanks for this. I was prediabetic and only started testing my blood sugar at home after 6 weeks on keto. I noticed that sometimes my blood sugar would drop after eating, from the 80s to the 70s. But will go back up to the 80s after a few hours. Does this mean I am still insulin resistant?

  14. I have this in spades on a daily badis. HOMA IR around 3. One time was 0.63. BG can be 170 2 days into a fast then drops immediately after eating. Question: how long does this go on after correcting the diet? I have been keto over a year and still have this.

  15. This is helpful. I'm trying to determine when to get off metformin. I know you cant give specific medical advice but how do you know when the time is right. My a1c is now 5.4, should go down by one or two points in the next few months. I suffer from dawn phenomenon big time, bs goes up to 120 to 127 .which for me is high and makes sleeping late difficult. Do I ignore this situation, take metformin? Not sure which direction to go. I've been following keto for a year and am stuck. Dont think I can improve until blood sugar remains below 100 – where I now feel my best. Any videos on this topic is helpful. Carbs generally lower than 20.

  19. On 15 May 19 I was diagnosed as diabetic. I'm 62 and I don't much care for big pharma. My glucose was at 486 and my A1C was 15.7. Today, 12 August, my glucose is hovering around 90-100 and my A1C is 5.6. I refused metformin and insulin when I was diagnosed. I've also lost 41 pounds since my diagnosis. I accomplished this with the carnivore diet. I also train with kettlebells. I'm nearly completely off blood pressure medication. I also occasionally dry fast but I mostly water fast and I use the snake juice suggested by the snake diet guy on you tube. You don't have to be a captive of the pharmaceutical. I accomplished this in literally less than 3 months. My new dietary goal is to switch over to the Paleolithic Ketogenic diet. Basically carnivore with a 2/1 ration of fat to protein by weight with an emphasis on eating organ meats regularly. It should be an outstanding lifestyle.

  21. I am 35 and after some routine blood tests my fasting glucose was 125 and mi A1C 7.4.
    I refused any medication and started keto.For the fist 4-6 weeks i would have high morning BS ( 110-120) even on keto.After eating it was dropping down. Nearly 3 months in to keto and IF now and my morning BS is ranging from 80-90 and my highest so far in the last 3 weeks one hour after eating was 104-106.
    I would like to thank you Dr. Ekberg for your videos, you were very helpful in my journey.
    I encourage anyone with the same problem to stick to Keto and IF and the results will show up in the end

  22. I've been taking 500mg Metformin each morning, as prescribed, but two months ago I started a Keto diet and have lost 15lbs weight. My blood tests show a normal reading, should I continue taking Metformin?

  23. Thanks! That’s the thing to remember, give it time. It seems also that the body hits plateau ‘s as part of that healing process. When I first started Keto and Metformin my BS was all over the place 90-150. Then gradually it hit a steady 130 dawn phenomenon. (Of course going down with food) Then it started a steady 120 dawn phenomenon, now it’s mostly 110. It always goes down with food. Prolonged fasts,96 hour, seem to help reset the levels. I never suffer from hypoglycemia, even when I’m fasting it don’t seem to get below 70. Maybe it has something to do with the Metformin??? The best part about this journey is the difference it’s made to my liver. It has shrunk so much! It was always so noticeable on my profile how large it was, and now it’s almost flat. Does that make sense??
    PS I don’t do alcohol, so my fatty liver was all from carbs, (recovering carb addict here.)
    Anyways, thank you for the great explanation as always.

    Love your videos, and i am always eager for the next video. Lots of info and easy, simple and smooth way of delivery.

    I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes since Feb 2019 not sure how long it was with me though. It was around 400, Dr straight away gave me the Glucophage 500 for 3 times aday and Diamicron and said go on diet and exercise. No more info lol my weight was around 80 Kg . I took the medicine for around two weeks and when i got into deep knowledge thanks to youtube and your video and the possibility to reverse type 2 diabetes. I ignored the medicine and strated almost keto diet, i won't say i am 100% keto lol but i am trying. Last may i did my A1c and it was 5.4 and lost almost 20 Kg.

    Now i feel great and still on the diet and exercise. However there is still some tinkle in my leg fingers and my eye sight abet blurry sometimes.

    I watched some Dr on youtube who said i should take B12 vitamins, corumium picolanate and Astragalus roots.

    Could you kindly advise regarding this and uf you can highlight the benefits of some vitamins/supplements you recommend for Type 2 diabetes patient who don't take the medicine anymore.

  28. Good, that answered my question. My A1C is now 6.1 out of type 2 diabetes level.

    But my fasting glucose level is still in 130s and blood pressure is still elevated. I was scratching my head, a few weeks back, when my sugar level dropped after a meal; 136 to 117 in one hour. Lately, I switched my diet to more of a carnivorous diet. And wandering high protein was causing my glucose level to go haywire! Reason for my new diet was to overcome or to prevent sarcopenia. The exercise was difficult, after having a stroke at 66 caused by type 2 diabetes and blood pressure medication. One information that was not discussed on intermittent fasting for a long time for older adults is the danger of developing sarcopenia.

    If you allow me, I would like to bring you back to the real world of the pre-diabetic….

    I would like to share something curious that could encounter anyone of your followers on this channel, which already happened personally to me.

    (I am currently on low carb diet since January 2019.)

    Based on hundreds of tests done at home during the last 9 months, my fasting blood glucose (BG) results showed clear up trend, moving slowly – from 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l) in Dec 2018/Jan 2019 toward 125 mg/dl (6.9 mmol/l) in Aug 2019.

    For the same period of time my Hb A1C score decreased from 5.8% to 5.1%

    For your reference, here are my personal results for HbA1C and BG, done at the clinical lab.

    3rd of May 2019:

    HbA1C 5.8% (equivalent of 120 mg/dl, or 6.6 mmol/l)

    At the same time – Fasting BG – 110 mg/dl , or 6.10 mmol/l

    HbA1C 5.74% (equivalent of 118 mg/dl, or 6.6 mmol/l)

    At the same time – Fasting BG – 122 mg/dl, or 6.78 mmol/l

    HbA1C 5.1% (equivalent of 100 mg/dl, or 5.5 mmol/l)

    At the same time – Fasting BG – 117 mg/dl, or 6.5 mmol/l

    So, if I have to summarize – being on low carb diet for the last 8 months my BG is slowly increasing(!!!), while my Hb A1c is decreasing, as per expectation.

    How could you explain this clear trend of decoupling between the values of HbA1C and the level of my BG?

  30. Do you take an acid alkaline balance into account? I used to eat a little meat or fish with loads of greens plus good fats like olive oil and avocados twice a day (9am and 4pm), it was about 5 years ago and I was lean (121 pounds) but my arthritis and other inflammations in my body wouldn’t go away. Now I’m on the whole plant-based diet and facing different problem extra 22 ponds but no inflammations in my body and loads more energy. I have dilemma: vegan keto is extremely restrictive and going back to eating meat is not appealing at all. Thank you

    One my family member excuses his higher fasting blood glucose (8 mmol/L) because he takes some drug for diluting blood 🙄🤔 Is it ok?

  32. Dr. Sten: I feel like you explained it well, but stopped just short of the punchline. For those of us that experience this high blood sugar until we eat, are you suggesting we suspend an intermittent fasting routine and eat a small, keto/low carb snack or breakfast in the morning to get cortisol and blood sugar down? I swear I can feel the cortisol hormone stressing me out until my blood sugar gets down. I'm thinking about taking this approach and periodically going back to intermittent fasting to see if my insulin sensitivity is improving. I would continue following a low carb/keto diet throughout.

  34. I been on to extreme the keto, no carbs, omad Diet & ACV water every day for a little over 2 weeks. My doc called today saying my glucose, sodium level was low. Now I’m worried trying to eat more salts and sugars. I’m suppose to go get checked tomorrow. I Hope 🙏🏻 everything is ok. &
    I haven’t felt any different.
