Make Money Blogging | How Holly Homer Took Turned Her Blogging Hobby Into a 7 Figure Business!

Have you ever heard if you want to do
something, find someone who has done it before and then just model them? Several
years ago when I started my own business I remember watching this show on CNBC
called the Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, and it interviewed entrepreneurs. On
the show, those entrepreneurs that started out just like you and I, would
share their success stories about how they started and grew their businesses,
into sometimes multi-million dollar brands! It was so inspirational. I
remember I would watch this show every week and it helped me so much because it
gave me belief and an example to follow. I just remember thinking like god they
can do it so can i well if you are looking for that type of story, then give
us a thumbs up and stay tuned for this week’s episode where we meet the amazing
Holly Homer. Hi everyone my name is Imee Gusich, from biggitybombmom.com where
we empower mompreneurs with the knowledge that they need to market their
businesses online. On today’s episode, we have a very special treat. We get to hear
the story of Holly Homer, who is a stay-at-home mom that took her hobby of
blogging and turned it into a seven-figure business that she runs from
her living room! Today Holly runs Facebook pages like Quirky Momma and AKA Mom, and has millions of followers online. So without further ado, stay tuned
and let’s meet Holly. So Holly is a blogger, and actually I’ll
have you to just tell a little bit of your story and like how you got started
but when I met Holly I was like, “Quirky Momma.. I know it heard of that before”. and
of course I went onto her page and I had already been following these these kids
activities because I’m a mom. and I was like wow that’s a lot of followers! just
like everybody I’m sure when they first meet you so anyway so I’ll just let you
kind of tell your story and how you got started and then we can kind of go from
there so yeah so tell us how tell us everything yeah so I’ve been a blogger
for first 12 years and so I currently run kids activities
calm and the quirky mama Facebook page and so that’s what most people know me
from now but like 12 years ago I was a mom at home I had three little boys
under the age of five and I was in the middle of my kitchen in chaos at all
times you know like kids just like rotating around me and within like
touching even though we had a large house and it was just such a different
thing because I had been married for about ten years before I had kids and I
had a career and like I went to work and people listened to what I had to say and
then all of a sudden I’m home and like yeah no one could care less what my
opinion yeah exactly so you know the in the middle of that I I had kind of
reconnected with a friend from college and we hadn’t seen each other in many
years but she had two boys about the same age as mine and I had three boys
and so we were writing these really long emails back and forth every Saturday
morning and so like my life kind of revolved around these Saturday mornings
because my husband um he’s a doctor so he was at the hospital pretty much all
the time and so like I was waiting for these
emails and we we basically would email kind of like a dump you know it would go
to her she would like kind of respond and do the same thing back and we did
this once a week and so we this has been going on for about a year and I remember
one Saturday morning like I was waiting for an email and waiting and waiting and
the subject line was I think we need to stop emailing okay the only reason I’m
making it a bedtime is because of this so I opened up the email and Jodie said
the next sentence was I think we should start blogs instead and I’m like I have
no idea what a blog is but like if that’s what it takes to maintain this
relationship like I am in so she told me like how to let go set up a free blog on
blogspot and which I did and I so I started June Cleaver Nirvana
that day which you know like I had just been kept like what I was putting in
those emails maybe a little sanitized because it was you know like my mom now
could read it and all this other stuff but then like a week into this I’m like
oh my gosh like this is gonna save me so much money cuz I was like scrapbooking
like crazy pants and like not only scrap pudding book one but like you had to
make like you know one for mom and one for other grandma you know me like I had
been like a lot of scrapbooking so I was so excited that this was gonna save me
so much money and then about three weeks into it I got a comment from a girl
named Megan and almost like Megan like that’s not my mom, that’s not my friend
like who in the heck is Megan? and so I clicked on the link in her in her
comment and I was like oh my gosh other people blog you’re just sharing like
what goes on in your life right yeah writing about your daily stuff with your
kids I had no idea this is a bang so and then like Megan had a blog role because
this is back in the prehistoric days I’m vlogging where people had blog roles in
their sidebar and almost like oh my gosh a lot of people do this and then and
like I just like that blog role on her sidebar I just like the dove into and in
fact some of those blogs um that are where in her sidebar are some of my
dearest friends today because that’s how we connected back then before Twitter
before Facebook before Pinterest all these things we would go to each other’s
blogs and leave comments and so the crazy thing is is I might have like 500
people read a blog post but I’d have 300 comments because we didn’t have any
other way of like you know that’s how we that was our social media back-end so
that was the early days of blogging and then once I really learned that other
people blocked it was like obsessed with the community and it was just such a
really cool support system because all of a sudden
I didn’t feel alone in that situation anymore see that’s so interesting and so
this is like that’s what I think it’s so funny is because you know in in this
group with biggity by mom you know we talk a lot about what should I post or
what should I do and and I have this business and yet all of these all of the
people that have huge platforms this you weren’t even thinking about a business
you were just thinking about I don’t know I just need I just want to email my
friend and never talk to me I just need a conversation all I need it and then
you started gaining followers simply because you were sharing your life this
wasn’t even even there wasn’t even a product in mind no and I think like
there’s good and bad with that because because I was in that mentality of oh
this is like aha I mean I I did it for years for free so like this was
something I loved enough to do for years for free and so like it was a hobby and
then you know then oh a few dollars here and there and then oh my gosh like my
husband retired two years ago to join our company online and solely because of
that growth over time that like anything is possible I mean like I can’t think of
a better time in the history of the world to be alive I mean like literally
from my living room you know this happened and it’s it’s insane when you
think about like what hoops I would have had to jump through to build a business
just 10 years ago 15 years ago a hundred years ago yeah absolutely you know I I
just stood alive the other day and I said how many of us would have jumped at
the chance you know when we were kids to have our own TV show or to have our own
radio show or to have our own magazine or game and now we simply have to turn
on our camera and we can have a TV show or you can you know blog and have a
magazine or a book or you can you know record yourself and simply publish it to
iTunes and now you have a podcast and so we have it like literally at our
fingertips it’s no I like think about like I guess
tell us about I don’t remember exactly the timeline but it was about like seven
years ago and like people were like you know why do you want to be in five years
like what’s your dream John like you know well I’d like to be Oprah and I’m
like you know like oh that’s never gonna invite me on her show um so like but I
can start a show with back then on Google+ and so I did and it was just
like so crazy because like we don’t have to ask we don’t have to wait for
invitations anymore like if you want to be Oprah you just turn on the camera and
you act like Oprah like nobody can tell you you can’t do that it’s totally in
your control so tell me a little bit about once you started getting on like
Facebook and and about your show you know I love your show crafting with crap
so funny tell us a little bit about that like how did you get into that and and
and then yeah well let’s start start there yeah absolutely
the funny thing is is when I started my blog everybody was pretty much writing
anonymously back then and it was you know like the internet was super scary
we were pretty sure that like children would be abducted through the through
their wires so we were very very cautious there’s like nobody knew where
would this was headed and so um the funny thing is one Facebook like open up
to old people knew we had to like like that was the day I had to decide like do
I claim my writing or do you know like I felt like you know I if I was gonna go
on Facebook like I had to like back it up with what I had been writing for the
last you know I guess two years and so that was kind of like the outing like oh
my gosh you know oh this is holly so that was kind of a big deal like try to
really realize that like oh my gosh there we’re gonna attach our identities
to these words that we had been writing for a long time and so um which I did
and I was really glad to do so because um you know the opening up doors is what
this this platform has done for me over time and one of the doors that was
opened was the that everyone’s know especially what actually only on
holidays the local Dallas news would like ask a blogger to come talk about
something so like I would get invitations like every Thanksgiving are
you doing you know Christmas Day would you like to come no I don’t like no but
it was such a good opportunity and such you know like like such a really cool
thing that this was probably about I don’t know seven or seven years ago or
so maybe a little less than that and I was asked on TV for a subject that I
actually wanted to talk about and it was in the summer so it wasn’t like on you
know on a holiday and stuff like that and I went to the interview and I froze
for the first 18 seconds of like a 30-second segment and I was like so
angry at myself and like you know like like why can’t I do this and you know I
really is that I needed I just needed to like I had you know when I was a
professional I had spoken in front of a crowd but I always made me nervous
I’m usually was in the bathroom throwing up before I went out on stage and then
it was like I’ve gotta get over this and so it was that day on the way home from
that horrifying experience that I just decided that I was going to just do
video because I thought well video is the closest thing I can practice
speaking in front of people and if that was right after Google+ had just
launched hangouts and that gave me the ability to talk to people without having
to edit because that was like my big excuse I can’t do video because I don’t
know how to edit I’m not techy like all this kind of stuff and so I started just
turning on the camera and talking and it took me it was really uncanny it was
like at a hundred hours that I started feeling comfortable on video and at that
time I also had made a decision that if I was asked to speak anywhere I was
gonna say yes for a whole year and and when you put that out in the universe
like be aware scary things will come up and not
after that I was asked by Michael Stelzner from social media examiner to
come speak at social media marketing world which was like largest of a social
media conference in the country and I remember like I was in the back yard
when he called and I still get like entirely nervous and he calls like seven
months in advance because like you know he’s planning ahead so then I had to be
nervous but doing like the live video every single day and was super super
amazing because what I didn’t know is that all those what I hadn’t really
planted on was all those videos that I was doing 100 hours of video then lived
on YouTube and people actually watched them and they actually watched a lot
like like a freakish amount of that I ate and then I went to a blocking
conference and like people were running up to me in the hallway like talking
talking talking and then I’m like rolling through my rolodex why do I know
this person why do I know such person why do I know this person and then at
the end of the conversation they’d be like oh I’m sorry I just watched all
your videos and I’m like they had connected with me on a friend level that
you can only get through video like it was crazy and like they knew me you know
they had when you watched a lot of video you see that person you know you see how
they act how they present themselves when their heart thinks because you hear
that you see their kids running through the background their dog you know like
all the chaos that’s in their house and you you become a part of that and so oh
so you didn’t like pre-plan these videos and like you weren’t like perfect and
polished on video oh my gosh it don’t wait to be like hot back I was so hot
mess I mean like the the early videos I wasn’t even doing it for any other
reason than to just learn how to talk and like especially when I knew that I
was gonna have to talk for an hour like in front of a crowd I was like I
need to practice just talking for an hour so I know that I can talk for an
hour and so yeah no their total hotness just like in fact if you go back to the
I need to a link on the I wrote my one of my very first videos was I think it
was five reasons I don’t want to do this video it does not like this is not brain
surgery people this is just like like turn on the camera and Holly just talks
and it was pretty rapid right we have a question Elias asking how do you come up
with subjects to talk about every day how do you come up with your topics yes
so like I started with just kind of talking about what I knew so my those
that early hundred hours was mostly about blogging like how to blog how I
did you know how I grew what I thought about Facebook like you know and that
was when we were growing the page and and so like it was just a lot of like
kind of nuts and bolts about what I knew and what I thought and then I did if you
go back to my youtube channel which is basically Holly Houma on YouTube is
you’ll see I’d also did I experimented with some interviews so I interviewed
some people I did a show called the parenting lounge which was several of us
and we just like took goofy topics we had a topic wheel and you know it was
just kind of it was kind of like an you know kind of an evening fun for moms
type thing and that’s that’s kind of where we headed Jamie um who who you
know is my partner and like crap with crap and and Jamie and Holly try stuff
and those silly shows she was one of the people I invited on the parenting lounge
many years ago and because I was just looking for people who were funny like I
just wanted to laugh I wanted to give like mom’s kind of a vacation from our
problems and that’s always been kind of my goal online is is like just be if you
know if you’re the the relief from like you know then you can brand yourself hot
mess like because people identify with that and stuff like that so yeah
absolutely I mean those are that’s great and such great insight too because I
think so many people are so frozen as – oh I don’t know what to say or what I
have to say is maybe not important or whose nobody’s gonna care and why why
should I feel silly and that’s okay and if you if you leverage Matt if you’re
just upfront telling people that they’ll love you so much more and they’ll
appreciate your journey yeah cuz we I mean you think about like if they wanted
they wanted real advice or glossy advice they would have gone watch television or
watch someone else like that’s not what they were looking for they you know they
I and I see this so much now like in any of our shows or any of our anytime I
like turn on the camera is people identify with your faults with your
quirks yeah like because they see themselves and that they feel less alone
um the you know just the deeper you can get into not being perfect actually I
mean I laugh and say like if you make a mistake on the Internet that’s called
authenticity like you know like if you make a mistake you know like at work you
know and you’re an accountant that could be a problem but like online like people
are like like oh she’s so authentic I’m super authentic yeah but I mean like and
I also want you to think about like what like if you were gonna hang out like
like this weekend if you’re gonna run a house and like get your high school
trends together like what would you be bonding over you’d be bonding over like
the stupid things you did like the time you like made in a complete like
embarrassment out of yourself in front of the whole class you would be pulling
from those like those crazy incidents that happen that are what hold you
together so don’t be afraid to have those experiences online because that’s
what that’s the glue that’s gonna keep you and your community pulled together
is those in what will become an inside joke down the road I love that I love
that so then when once you had you know kind of this thing like where was where
was the point in your hosting and publishing that you thought
huh I could probably make some money doing
this and when what did you what did you come up with because you know in your
case you you built this following and then a product and I think so many
people think of an opposite I need a product now I need if I have a product
now I need a following so what did what did you do to kind of come up with you
know so everything kind of interesting because like there’s been phases of my
business that that have you know reached different levels of monetization and so
like the first like really the first time I actually thought oh my gosh like
there’s money and blogging was was all because of pajama jeans I was on my
husband I own I wish I had the picture I could put up right now I totally grew
yeah yeah I’ll tell them he’s heard this story but but he um so my husband and I
were laying in bed one night and we were watching infomercials because that’s
what people who’ve been married for a hundred years do and the the pajama
jeans commercial came up and like ten minutes in my husband’s like you really
want those to ask you and I’m like no no no I’m good
and he’s like no no like I can tell you totally want them I’m like I’m sure they
suck and you know I’m like talking myself out of it and he’s like why don’t
you buy those and write about him on your blog and I’m like oh like business
expense you know like I couldn’t be super you know and um so I did I went
through the ordering process and like when my pajama jeans arrived they were
horrible but I wrote this kind of funny um
blog post about like I took I had no idea what a genius SEO moved this was
but I took me like the YouTube version of the infomercial and then I went
through it like like kind of their they’re like tag lines and what they
emphasize is part like overcoming objections like like so they they went
through it like line by line and then I would add my
two cents and so you know they they look like jeans but feel like pajamas you
know and so I would like kind of wrote that all out and put my little two cents
in and my readers thought it was hysterical like it was a really big hit
um I had and so I that kind of uh started a whole as-seen-on-tv
kind of theme for me for awhile just because it was something that like we we
all could identify we all wanted to push by on the pajama jeans let’s just admit
it and I actually did it so like I was exploiting that a little bit kind of you
know kind of our fascination with these things and then a few months later and
this point my blog was getting maybe 10,000 pages a month which at that time
be this was pretty much you know pre social media in general which is a
pretty decent sized blog for that time and then all of a sudden like I’m like
like uh hundred thousand people visited my blog but ninety thousand of them hit
the be damaging posted wow what is going on and like I installed
you know ads real quick because all of a sudden I’m actually gonna make some
money on this and um and so I like did a little research and pajama jeans and
this is where we’re rolling into kind of the holidays and pajama jeans had been
pulled into the pajama Graham like kind of family for the holidays and they were
like doing non-stop radio ads which and the beautiful thing of radio ads is
people hear it and then they go and google it so and I was on the front page
of Google for like 26 pajama gene turns so I was dominating and so all those
people were coming to my blog and really reading my pajama Jean
post and um which was really really cool and so I like I was monetizing with some
sidebar ads and stuff like that and then I didn’t have an affiliate link to the
pajama jeans I was gonna say the next thing that happened is the pajama jean
affiliate reached out to me because I was on the front page for pajama jeans
and they said and I had never done affiliate marketing so they said all you
need to do is put this little image ad at the bottom of your post and then
we’ll give you $11 for every pet heritage a magician so except
I was like crap I didn’t like them I can’t sell something that I don’t like I
mean that would be wrong and so I had like this moral crisis I like I can’t
make money off of something I didn’t like and then I was like no let me go
back and read my post so I read through my post and I thought if anyone still
wants these after they read this post I should definitely make money off it
totally oh my gosh that’s so funny so I installed it and then I was selling
between I don’t know 8 and 15 pairs of pajama jeans a day so all of a sudden
like holy moly like there’s money coming in and um and I was like oh well you
know I’ll ride this through the holidays and then I’ll be like that was a great
ride and so I wrote it through the holidays and then I was like kind of sad
but I you know like I was like at least I made some money and then um pajama
gram decided that if you really loved your sweetie
you would buy pajama jeans for a Valentine’s Day and so the wave started
again and I had people just like come into the blogpost all through
Valentine’s Day and like yes you know another two months of this which is
amazing and then I know alcohol crash and then and then pajama Graham said you
know if you really love your mother you’ll buy her pajama jeans so I was
able to write it through Mother’s Day that year and then it did crumble but
the money that I made from pajama jeans is what was the was almost exactly the
amount that I paid for the blog that is now kids activities fun so wow I’d
honestly like my whole blog is because of pajamas amazing what a great story
and here’s one thing that I want to kind of make a point
in in that whole story is that you created something once and then it was
the traffic that was driven to this over and over and over again that created you
money over and over and over again and so what a powerful story of publishing
that you took something that was just funny and that you published it and and
you were able to make money from an affiliate you know and from advertising
as well and all you had to do after that is just keep driving traffic to it so
yeah and like and I think one of the things that like when we you know
especially people who are approaching like publishing and a publishing can be
blogging or video or podcasting or whatever that is for you but a lot of
times I see when people come at it from oh I want to sell X they feel like they
have to publish in X and the boundaries of X like so if you’re selling something
that you know that sells a widget then the only thing that you can do is
publish around a widget like and I want to completely break that like mindset
you are in charge of your destiny and you can publish whatever the heck
you want to publish and when you let your passions like lead you down the
publication route number one you’re gonna look forward to doing it every day
right it you know like because it’s fun and so um I want to give you an example
of this just to you know because it’s something that’s kind of mind-blowing to
me when we look back but so crafts with crap is a show that I do on Facebook
live on also known as mom on Facebook page with Jaime and we’ve been doing it
for years I think we’re in our I don’t know seventh season I don’t know we make
it out so um but basically we’re given four crappy items and 20 minutes to
craft them into something amazing and it’s not amazing and then the people who
are watching it to vote and they need about an emoji form only for whoever
they want to win and so it’s just silly I mean ridiculous silly like there’s no
redeeming value to this you know you learn anything you just it’s the point
of it is just kind of a vacation from your problems just you know kind of hang
out with us and that’s that’s we started it with in fact our joke is like we need
to figure out how to monetize it because it costs us money to do this show cuz we
have to buy the crap um but the UM what we had been running it for a while and
then and I had no monetization strategy on Facebook live I just knew I wanted to
do it and so eventually I saw someone who was using Facebook live selling
lularoe clothing and he was monetizing that way and I was like oh well I could
do that so like that’s how we can monetize our lives is by selling
clothing so we joined lularoe and we started selling lots of clothes on live
and we’re still doing these crafts with rap shows um you know once a week and um
about a year later we were just laughing about you know we had kind of fallen out
of like the schedule across with crap and you’re like oh let’s go watch like
the first one or one or two and we watched the like the first video or two
and what was amazing is that the people who are commenting on that first craft
with crap video like those people that showed up for that show and we’re like
really engaged so many of them like more than ten had bought into our lularoe
downline to the tune of six to eight thousand dollars like so they watched a
silly show on Facebook and then months later opted into a business opportunity
completely different that was high ticket yeah and you like so you would
like you know in your brain you would think oh somebody who would watch craft
with perhaps yeah they might like buy into you know I’m fifty dollar product
or something like that you know you think like but no and the reason for
that is because they watch us on these silly
shows they know like and trust us and so when we come out with something a little
bit more serious or or when we’re saying hey if we can do this you can do this
they actually trust us because they’d seen they’d seen the warts they’ve seen
us fail they’ve seen us make a like a mockery and so like they think like I
can do that too and so like don’t like do not pigeon you’re like if we had said
oh we’re gonna sell the lularoe opportunity we need to go out and just
talk about clothing just talk about opportunities people who want to work
from home you know what most those people had no idea what they were
getting into they like they just wanted to be part of a movement that’s awesome
that’s awesome yeah I think there’s so much opportunity for us to be able to
publish like that and just to kind of gain connection and gain you know with
with people and then when you have something but though they’re listened
because they like you said they know like and trust you and how valuable is
that to then you know and then you were able to grow a successful business yeah
like like literally millions of dollars like so like they’re gonna self-select
for whatever you happen to do you know any mean like so you know like if like
we sell you know a product called happy coffee right now and like people just
like hey I’m interested in that and they opt-in and so they get in that kind of
like environment where we talk more about it but they come from an
environment that has nothing to do with that product is and so it’s okay
absent and then so when you’re doing something like that like a show you know
so you’ll say hey how do you kind of press that like oh you know I think the
last time we talked to you you were you know because it’s a such a silly so show
you could say oh brought to you by happy company it looks like a like a sponsor
we get to like be really silly because we
this up but like yeah we’ll be like you know how this show like we have to find
a sponsor for her this show well we can’t do it anymore unless you join our
coffee group because that’s how we’re monetizing this show you know I mean
we’ll just call it because they’re there behind the curtain they know like we’re
like they think that like they are inside like our world so we can do like
like hey guys like like we’re selling coffee over here so we can support this
habit we have to going live and just spending money but you can do the same
thing today on your personal profile sending them to wherever you want to so
you could like you know I don’t know you care what your product is but you could
like you know go live tonight on your personal profile making dinner and then
like during the conversation say you know what like I just started this thing
XYZ I’m doing it over here on this space on this Facebook page in fact I’m gonna
go live in you know 10 minutes over there if you want to join me um but like
so think about your your personal profile as the trailer of whatever you
know you content you might be putting somewhere else so that you can pull your
community they can self-select for that for that and then you’re never selling
anything when you’re just allowing people to self-select
and then you’re giving them the information to those who want I love
that that’s so powerful so awesome so I mean I just feel like in the last half
an hour we’ve just had you know value bomb City because so many I hope that
anybody that watches this on replay or any anything in the future really
understands you know they’re able to break through those barriers that so
many people have just based on your story alone which is you know thank you
so much for your diamond and oh because what I do like I tell stories all day I’ll just talk if you had any you know
advice to moms you’re a stay-at-home mommy and your home school dear children
that wanted to start a business like what would you tell them you know what
would be your top advice to just get going yeah actually my top advice is get
going yeah just do it I mean just get going because if you’re waiting around
for someone to give you permission or if you’re waiting around for you to become
perfect at something or if you’re waiting around for someone to be like
hey come use my plat no this is this is 2019 like we don’t have to wait around
like if you want to be out Brad you turn on the camera
you know and like the thing is is at some point that’s gonna lead to a larger
audience then Oprah could ever have on TV yeah do
you understand that Oprah is like trying to figure out how
to leverage the internet like all these all these big time like media types
they’re sitting around in in um you know meeting rooms trying to figure out how
can we get online and you have such an advantage because you don’t have to a
legal department that tells you you can’t say something right you don’t have
to go ask permission from somebody up ahead it you know and you have to go
figure out a budget like you just turn on the camera like you know like you
turn on your phone camera and so today you do something that gets that just
puts you out there and then every day from here on out you are going like my
life was changed by a movie what about Bob be like the whole baby steps like
his whole that whole movie is about him like coming out of his anxiety by just
taking baby steps like baby steps to the elevator baby steps to the sailboat like
I literally run baby steps to the elevator through my head 400 times a day
because like if we are just like my whole business has been belt built on
baby steps because like we’re moms we’re busy we have wake
we probably have a job we have like kids and they need to eat and they need to be
clothed and they need to be clean and they like and then we have a husband or
a partner and then we have I mean like the list the list goes on so it’s not
like we have the luxury of like checking at an 8 and leaving at 5:00 on a our
business we have this much time three times a day and you don’t know when
that’s gonna be or we have like nap time or we have after bedtime our we have get
up early time and that’s our only time we have so if you’re trying to wait for
a time that you have time to start a business you’re not you’re like maybe
when they’re teenagers and they like hide in their room and they don’t want
to talk to you it’s like that you so like if you want to wait till then that
works but if you want to start today and you can start today you’re just gonna do
baby steps every day and if you’re just baby stepping like if you’re just in
some amount of momentum like it is ridiculous what a tiny bit of progress
every day can build you over time that’s awesome that’s awesome well thank you so
much Holly you are inspiring and awesome and Ellie is saying thank you so much
