MENTAL HEALTH in competitive DANCE WORLD / What is COMMERCIAL DANCE?

as I’m taking this journey with dance
journals I’m discovering that there are so many talented dancers in London and
also London is one of the hubs when it comes to commercial dance so by
commercial dance we mean that dancing sessions for the commercials or for the
videos of the musicians or the singers so after the u.s. we can say that London
is the best place in Europe when it comes to commercial dance there is high
competition in this city so one of these very talented dancers choreographers and
movement directors is Brendon Hansford hello everyone welcome to dance journals
in this YouTube channel we talk about dance and our aim to encourage everyone
to dance like Mick Jagger in their everyday life Brendon Hansford is
a director and choreographer who has worked with musicians like Sam Smith
Rod Stewart and Rick Astley the reason for me to pick Brendon specifically for an
interview is importance that he gives to mental health
he has a youth company where he educates young dancers and mental health is one
of the topics that he teaches to them he has a short dance film named therapy
that you can watch in YouTube and it is about mental health Brendon is a very
hardworking person he does short films vlogs and also dance tutorials in
YouTube when I first filmed his class it was
summertime and then we could do the interview months later as he has a very
tight schedule I first filmed his class in pineapple Studios in London in Covent
Garden and then in the interview we talked about commercial dance world and
mental health so first of all what is commercial dance
the dance sector from my opinion splits into like three main categories is
you’ve got the commercial section you’ve got musical theater and then you have
contemporary and modern and they’re all massive massively different
kettle of fishes kettle of fish yes yeah they’re completely completely different
so the contemporary world kind of has its own rules and methods and ways to
get in there same with the MT world they’re very
tight-knit and everyone kind of knows each other and then the commercial world
again is everyone kind of knows each other what a commercial choreo generally
we’ll work with more short-term contracts like music videos commercials
live shows that kind of short based with enough I’m actually crossing more over
into theatres now which is kind of strange I’m kind of entering that world
but generally speaking they’re a lot shorter they generally for camera or
live TV or something like that but commercial actually doesn’t really
mean any particular dance style it just means anything that’s commercially
viable so if you can sell it it’s commercial and is dance world competitive? I remember reading a stats once something like there are 69000 dancers in the UK and only really
two to three thousand jobs a year so the competition is huge. so how t o mentally survive in this competitive dance world? I think maybe
colleges need to do a little bit more to prepare people for the industry and
really get them in the right mindset and a little bit of a thicker skin I feel
like I’ve got that thick skin now many many years into it but I know in the
beginning it used to really hit me quite hard when an audition went wrong
especially if it’s my fault I made a mistake because again it’s not about
your qualifications and your tips it’s about that moment in that room and
whether you can perform to the ability they want you to. have your circle of
friends who you trust your confidence people you can run to so people can talk
to get it out hundred percent have a therapy I’m a huge believer in therapy
and life coaching so 100 cent have a therapist you can download on you can
talk to and the great thing is you can talk to them you don’t have to listen to
their problems and they’re great at giving advice what
else mental health again do class class is a great way to boost your energy
boost your metabolism and not metabolism but class releases serotonin and
serotonin is a happy hormone so you always come at class and feeling great so
just socialize with the right people stay away from the negative and just
try and stay positive if there’s a lot of willpower involved unfortunately I
guess it is like that for everyone just don’t forget to take care of your mind
and mental health and your soul with dance the links to the YouTube channel
and Instagram account of Brendon is below see you next time
