Newspaper drops George Will column

>>>WELCOME BACK. THIS NEXT STORY HAS INFURIATED A LOT OF PEOPLE. IT INVOLVES GEORGE WILL. HE’S BEEN WRITING FOR THE WASHINGTON POST FOR FOUR DECADES. HIS CONSERVATIVE TAKE ON POLITICS AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS APPEARS IN NEWSPAPERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. HE’S REGULAR ON TV. HE’S LEFT ABC NEWS TO JOIN FOX NEWS CHANNEL AS A COMMENTATOR. HE’S A PROVOCATIVE WRITER BUT SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT THIS COLUMN WILL PUT IT UP ON SCREEN WENT TOO FAR. IT WAS A COLUMN ABOUT GOVERNMENT INFLUENCE ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES. WILL ASSERTED THAT VICTIMHOOD IS BECOMING A, QUOTE, COVETED STATUS THAT CONFERS PRIVILEGES FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. HE USED A GRAPHIC EXAMPLE OF AN ALLEGED CAMPUS RAPE TO I ILLUSTRATE WHAT HE DESCRIBES AS A CONTRADICTORY STATISTIC FROM THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ON WHAT ACTUALLY CONSTITUTES SEXUAL ASSAULT. THERE WAS INSTANT CRITICISM BY THE LIBERAL MEDIA MONITORING GROUP MEDIA MATTERS AND BY U.S. SENATORS WHO ACCUSE HIM OF TRIVIALIZING THE SKURGE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND TREATING THIS AS A SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE PHENOMENON. ONE OF THE MANY PAPERS THAT SUBSCRIBES TO HIS COLUMN SEEMS TO AGREE. THAT’S THE ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH. THIS WEEK THE EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR TOLD READERS THAT THE PAPER WOULD NO LONGER BE RUNNING WILL’S COLUMN. DID THE PAPER DO THE RIGHT THING? LET’S BRING IN THE EDITORIAL EDITOR, TONY MESSENGER. THANKS FOR JOINING US. >>THIS WEEK YOU TOLD READERS YOU WERE THINKING ABOUT PULLING THE PLUG FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BUT WILL’S COLUMN ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT MADE THE DECISION EASIER. WHY IS THAT?>>WELL, THE REACTION WE HAD FROM READERS, PARTICULARLY FROM WOMEN, SO MANY OF THEM WERE SO DEEPLY OFFENDED THAT THEY COULD BE CALLED — THAT GEORGE WILL TOLD THEM THAT THEY WERE TRYING TO SOMEHOW SEEK A SPECIAL STATUS, THAT THEY WERE TRYING TO SEEK SOME PRIVILEGED STATUS BECAUSE OF THEIR ALLEGED SEXUAL ASSAULT. IT JUST — WE HAD A LOT OF READERS VERY ANGRY AND VERY HURT. IT CAUSED US TO GO BACK AND TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND IT REINFORCED OUR PREVIOUS DECISION THAT HE HAD LOST A LITTLE BIT OF SPEED OFF HIS FASTBALL AND IT CAUSED US TO MAKE THE DECISION A LITTLE BIT MORE QUICKLY THAN WE WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE. >>YOU APOLOGIZED FOR RUNNING THE COLUMN IN THE FIRST PLACE. THAT MUST HAVE BEEN PRETTY RARE.>>I DON’T KNOW THAT IT’S EVER HAPPENED BEFORE. IT MIGHT HAVE. IT HASN’T HAPPENED IN MY TENURE. THE REASON FOR THAT WAS WE DID RUN IT AND SO OUR REACTION TO IT GOING BACK AND TAKING A LOOK AND REALIZING THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF OFFENSIVE IMAGERY IN THAT THAT VICTIMIZED WOMEN, WE HAD TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT. WE PUBLISHED IT. WE WISH WE WOULDN’T HAVE. >>LET ME READ WHAT THE OP ED EDITOR WROTE IN RESPONSE TO SOME OF THE CRITICISMS. HE SAID GEORGE WILL’S COLUMNS WAS WELL WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF LEGITIMATE DEBATE. HE WENT ON TO SAY RATHER THAN URGE ME TO SILENCE A VIEWPOINT I DISAGREE WITH, I WOULD URGE OTHERS TO JOIN THE DEBATE AND NOT MISCHARATERIZE THE COLUMN. IS THAT WHAT YOU’RE DOING?>>WELL, IF WE WERE DROPPING THE COLUMN, THERE’S ONE PARTICULAR OFFENSIVE ELEMENT. THAT’S A CRITICAL ELEMENT. THE ELEMENT OF THAT COLUMN THAT CAUSED US TO DROP IT WAS THAT WE FOUND IT VERY OFFENSIVE TO MANY OF OUR READERS AND THAT’S WELL WITHIN OUR RIGHTS ON AN EDITORIAL PAGE. THAT’S WELL WITHIN OUR RIGHTS TO DECIDE WHAT SORT OF DEBATE, WHAT LEVEL OF CIVILITY, WHAT LEVEL OF TREATMENT OF WOMEN WHO ARE SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS WE’RE GOING TO ALLOW ON OUR PAGE. >>CAN YOU UNDERSTAND WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE SAYING IT’S INTOLERANT TO DROP THE COLUMN?>>ABSOLUTELY. THAT’S UNFORTUNATELY THE NATURE OF THE DEBATE. A LOT OF THE RESPONSES THAT WERE NEGATIVE TO OUR DECISION ACCUSED OF OF DOING SO FOR POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. THAT’S NOT THE CASE. WE BELIEVE THAT THE COLUMN TRIF VALLIZEs SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS. WE BELIEVE IT TRIF VALLIZEs VERY SERIOUS ATTEMPTS ON CAMPUSES TO DEAL WITH THE SCURGE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. WE’VE WRITTEN ABOUT THE TOPIC ON OUR EDITORIAL PAGE A LOT AND I’M COMFORTABLE WITH OUR INTERPRETATION OF WHAT MR. WILL WROTE. >>WOULD YOU EVER BRING GEORGE WILL BACK BY THE WAY?>>I WOULDN’T CLOSE MY DOOR TO ANYTHING RELATED TO THAT. I MEAN, LIKE I SAID, WE MAKE OP ED DECISIONS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. WE LOST SOME “NEW YORK TIMES” COLUMNISTS A FEW YEARS AGO FOR FINANCIAL

  1. Here come all the morons who don't know the difference between social consequences of free speech and censorship…

  2. George will is absolutely right. And now he will be better off cause fox news has the best ratings across the board

  3. George Will poster-boy white guy hasn't had a lifetime of loud-mouthed privilege? Perhaps he could enjoy even more by getting gang-banged by college guys.on some tony college campus..

  4. Almost anytime, in any circumstance, where a speaker, especially someone of Will's prominence, is silenced or their writings are discontinued, this is the result of the more cowardly way of dealing with speech matters in our society. The biggest shocker and the biggest "sin" is the extent to which this has begun to happen on college campuses. It's totally against what we stood for in the 60s with the Free Speech Movement. When the speaker or writer is discontinued, turned away, etc., it means those who opposed him cannot speak competently against him/ her.

  5. George Will is a senile old fool who hasn't put a meaningful idea into print since he was a blathering young fool.

  6. Note that there are quotes from critics and a focus on the reaction. They do not actually quote or address accurately what he wrote. This is the insidious bias of CNN. It's not that they always lie, but that they carefully curate what is presented so that it affirms their narrative. They always have their finger on the scale for the left.

  7. George Will has lost his mind since Trump got elected. He's a traditional republican and couldn't fathem Donald holding office. This is called Trumpafluenza. It causes their brains to hemerage and babble on about whatever subject. It's true. Another example: John Legends sorry excuse for a wife Chrissy Teagun blames a tooth ache she has on Donald Trump. Claims she grinds her teeth since his election. This broad is a real winner.

  8. People in St Louis know this paper has been a leftist rag for years. They do not speak the truth. And people are no longer willing to buy the paper in the numbers necessary to justify the printing. It's now mostly only available on line. Every year the paper runs false stories about how blacks are pulled over by police in numbers that suggest bias. Something that has been disproven by academics.

Europeans are perplexed by Americans unwillingness to buy papers anymore. They don't understand that the press has become leftist and this is a conservative country. Even when the Post was printing a paper, there were no distribution boxes in the black sections of town. Blacks and liberals don't read much.
