Photoshop Tutorial – Newspaper Photo Effect

Alright, lets get started. Zoom in using your Zoom Tool. (Z) You can use the Quick Selection Tool or the Pen Tool. I will use the Pen Tool. (P) Take your time and select the entire model. Since this part is very time consuming, I will speed it up! Once your selection has been made. Right Click – Make Selection. Hit OK. CTRL + 0 to Zoom back out. Head up to Select – Select and Mask. Select Refine Edge, if you’re using a different version of Photoshop. Select the Refine Radius Tool. Only select the outline of the models hair. Output To: Layer Mask. Then hit OK. Create a new adjustment layer – Solid Color. Make sure the color is white. Then OK. Drag it below the model layer. I am now going to add a newspaper texture. Select your Move Tool (V) Drag and drop onto our project. Zoom out if needed. CTRL + T to select the newspaper layer. Right click – Flip clockwise. Increase the size of the newspaper. Be sure to hold alt while resizing. Hit enter, when you’re done. Bring down the opacity to about 40%. I am going to rename the newspaper layer to newspaper background. I am going to rename this layer to Man. Create a new adjustment layer – Black and White. Then hit close. Bring down the opacity of the black and white adjustment layer to about 90%. Lets head back and select our newspaper texture. Select your Move Tool. (V) then drag and drop onto our project. Lets change the Blending Mode – Overlay. Bring down the opacity to about 70%. CTRL + T to select the newspaper. Resize over the model. Size depends on your own preference. Hit enter when you’re done. Hold ALT + Click between the two layers to create a clipping mask. Duplicate the newspaper texture. CTRL + J. Position as needed. Hit enter when you’re done. Create a new adjustment layer – Gradient Map. Click to edit gradients. Link for all my gradients in the description. Select a nice gradient. Hit OK when you’re done. Change the Blending Mode to Overlay. Bring down the opacity level to about 20%. Next, I am going to add a crumpled paper texure. Using your Move Tool. Drag and drop onto our project. CTRL + T to select the paper. Resize until it fits the entire image. Hit enter when you’re done. Change the Blending Mode to Multiply. Bring down the opacity to about 30%. CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E – Merge all visible layers. I am going to create a vignette effect. Head up to Filter – Lens Correction. Click on Custom. Vignette Amount: – 50. Then OK. That’s it! Let me know in the comments if you watched the whole thing! 😀

  3. Very good. Thanks for the gradients and links.

I used your idea, but did it with a different model and a sheet of music. I also used a displacement map for it, which then wrapped around the details in the face. Kind of started with your idea, then went off.
    Thanks.
