Prachee’s preprint journal club

Prachee’s preprint journal club

Hi my name is Prachee Avasthi; I’m an assistant
professor of Anatomy & Cell Biology and the University of Kansas Medical Center. We started a preprint journal club for our
graduate students. The idea was to give them an opportunity to
review a paper that had not already been peer reviewed, which was also great for them. But also we wanted to take care of this problem
that preprints are not getting a ton of feedback right now. So we wanted to give some feedback based on
our journal club and send that directly to the senior authors and we got a wonderful
response from the senior authors. Most often we heard that they were thrilled
that we read their preprint and they gave us point-by-point responses and in some cases
they said “yes, we submitted this article, and we heard similar comments back from the
reviewers.” We also heard that they had new comments that
they appreciated that they would incorporate into a new version. So it was a very positive experience for the
authors, I think, and also for the students to have an opportunity to interact with the
scientists on very cutting edge work. We are also posting the reviews for the student
journal club directly to The Winnower. That really makes it very easy to find; also
it’s something that other students can learn from – making these comments public so people
can sort of read the preprint, read the reviews, and all of that is really great for advancing
the science.
