Ring Light for YouTube Videos Review — Video Lighting Tips

In this video im gonna review one of my favorite
lighting set ups for YouTube and eighteen-inch ring light as well as a
few tips and tricks for getting the best lighting resu lts with it coming up Hey what’s up guys Sean here with think media
tv helping you go further faster in media and if you’re new here thanks so much for
stopping by on this and on this channel we do video reviews audio and lighting reviews
just like this one so definitely subscribe and hey at any point during this video check
out show notes and just a summary of this entire episode in the YouTube description
below everything I talk about I’ll list out down there let’s go check out the ring light
ok so this is a halo prismatic eighteen inch ring light this is my new favorite lighting solution
for just making YouTube videos for a couple reasons number one it’s super easy to setup you can
just pull it out of the box plug it in and you are ready to go number two is dimmable
so you can get different brightness levels for your videos number three it’s a daylight
balanced fluorescent ball and so as you can see I love to shoot right here in my office with
the window light coming in and then I get a great Brightness off of the ring light it’s a great
color temperature as a light ball goes its versatile you can use it outside for video or photo shoots
number four is low heat and so this is awesome because they rely pretty close
to me and some other lighting setup I’d use is like a traditional halogen
soft box and it put off a ton of heat so if you’re in front of the camera the last
thing you want is more heat coming at you causing you to sweat during shoots next I’m
using it with a light stand and I got and I got the tripod and a canon 70D with
a ten to twenty two lens on it and a shotgun mic and I love this set up and the look that has
but what’s cool is depending on where you’re starting if you want versatility
is got a cold shoe mount that comes with it so you can easily put a point and
shoot or you can also get a cell phone mount and mount mount your smart phone directly
on the light it self so you could have a super quick setup without an
extra tripod contained right into the ring light and another option im really looking
forward to is that by doing your cellphone in that shoe mount you could go your live
streaming with periscope great lighting with the ring light and then just mount your phone directly
on it I also like the diffusion plate system which snaps on and eliminate hard shadows
and just gives the light a nice diffuse look plus protects the ball with the
hard plastic and I also like the fact that its super portable so it’s easy to take with
you in the case that it comes with and now you have like a one light solution that you
can set up in a hotel room or anywhere on the road to get kind of a consistent look across
all your videos so ultimately makes videos look really great and also like how it makes pictures
look and specifically for making YouTube thumbnails and you know shooting on your camera in the
settings so you could pick this ring light up on Amazon but also directly through DVE
store.com that’s where this one came from and so check out links in the YouTube description
for a couple different options number one it doesn’t come with a light stand
however there is a bundle on amazon with the light stand in case you need that
and then also check out the different mounts that they offer on DVE store and also the ring
light itself comes with this piece that you can mount your point and shoot camera or even
any camera up to 2 pounds directly on the ring light but then there different options you
can just add your own like this is a me photo cell phone mount that could easily combined with
this so you could do video on your smart phone or this one is from DVE store you could do
video on your tablet right on the ring light itself with this set up and use like an iPad or something
else so anyway I’ll link all things in the YouTube description so you can kind of
research and see what your options are and how we recently just launched the think
media tv buyers guide and so if you are looking for pro options or budget options
it’s literally a range for every budget for audio video lighting all that kind of stuff
you can download that for free I’ll link it up on the YouTube card as well as in the description
below if you are looking for video gear to crush it with online video this
year question of the day what do you think about ring lighting and
whats your opinion of the results of this video right here as well as have you

and I’m exhausted but hey if you haven’t seen the video on consistency batching is one of the tips in
the YouTube card YouTube card will link link to that video if you’ve never seen it

  1. Thank you so much for your help! I'm so happy to have found your channel. Quick question about the ring light. I love mine, BUT, I wear glasses. Is there any way I can work with the ring light and not have the reflection of the ring light stealing focus from my content? It's driving me nuts!

  2. P. S I really really really appreciate this page. I am so excited to start my journey. Well I did, a year ago, but I am excited for the next step.

  3. I like that ring light I may have to purchase it I've been looking at it on Amazon for quite a while I may have to take the dive. Thank you very much for the review.

  4. I have a LED ring light for my videos and love it so much, yes its versatile for photos and video too. I had a cell phone ring light when i first started (about 1" dia). I mounted it on my tripod with my phone front facing camera to make videos.

  5. Love this channel. It’s been extremely helpful for selecting my gear. I appreciate the time, effort and energy that you put into making your communication really clear. It’s obvious that there’s a lot of work that goes into each episode that isn’t about the actual gear.

Quick comment on this topic. I’ve seen some great photos with ring-lights and they definitely provide a nice look. But I’m no sold AT ALL on seeing them in video. I don’t know if it’s placement, size or something else….but there’s something really unnatural about seeing a ring of light around someone’s pupil. I’m willing to chalk it up to a “taste” preference…but sometimes it’s so alien-like in its appearance that it’s totally distracting from the message and the content itself.

Have you found any ring-light setups that would work for someone who wants a more subtle effect?

  6. I really enjoy but more importantly learn from your posts! I just bought a ring light for a channel I am starting to build and I am looking forward to using it thanks for this set up video.

  7. how would you go for setting the ring light behind monitors? for streamers for example, do you have to get a stand? is there anything that could fit on a desk? thanks

  8. you got any recommendations for cheaper light rings ? i feel like not everyone could throw in 250$ for a light especially after investing in a camera, lens etc.

  9. I love the effect ring lights.I appreciate that you showed the different mounts. I'd just been wondering if it was possible to use with my ipad and just then you brought out the tablet in that mount. Very cool.

  10. What is the best lighting for people with glasses? Would a ring light cause terrible reflections?

  11. Does this replace the need for 3 point lighting when working with green screen for talking head videos? Also, can you use this with the slide gear teleprompter kit?

  12. I just bought one for livestreaming. Recently I have been usng a lamp and since I have been doing that and staring at screens all day I feel like my eyes have gotten damage. I havent been shining the map directly at me, just as fill light. So with a ring light I figured it would be better for my face. I am afraid of damaging my eyes if I am livestreaming for a few hours a day and that light is right above the monitor shining the whole time. Has anyone had any experience with long term use of a ring light?

  13. Question… I'm a barber and want to start filming in my barbershop…because of the space I'm working with I'll have to set the ring light between 6 to 8 feet away for my barber chair…is a ring light still a good option for me or is there something better???

  14. Heyy ? so I have a beauty room with no windows. I do have one ring light but my pics dont come out good. Is there anything I can do or need to make it better? Thank you!!

  15. So I have the same situation set up that you have I have a window on one side and there’s no place to put the camera and the ring light except in the exact spot where you have it so another words I cannot put the ring light in front of the window so when I’m looking at your video and I’m seeing more of a shadow on the side where the window is in other words that part of the face is a lot lighter than the other side so I was hoping that you would maybe talk about how that ring light kit even that out given the fact that that window is right there because I’ve got the same situation going on where 1/2 of my face is lighter than the other half

  16. I bought this ring light with stand and did a comparison video using my iPhone 6plus. It literally is night and day with the ring light.

  17. Im looking at a setup and software that allows me to do coaching calls with my clients. This light looks great, but what camera would be suitable? I dont want to use a webcam.

  18. Just picked up a ring light last night and have been playing with it all day today. It's so awesome and I feel like my still photos are elevated just with the light alone. Thanks for suggesting this!

  19. The light is nice but I don't like that you're shooting from above. What is your reason for that? Have you tried shooting straight on?

  20. QOTD ⚡️ What lighting kit do you use for your videos? Let me know! ??? Also, check out other videos in our BEST Budget YouTube Equipment series here ➡️➡️➡️ http://bit.ly/BestBudgetGear

  21. Hi Sean! I was looking to upgrade my setup, and again found myself watching one of your incredibly helpful videos. I heard about ring lights before (Jacksepticeye was the first YouTuber who made me aware of them), and after this video, I'll definitely get myself one, to improve my light situation for my videos, especially since I wanna record new types of videos outside of my usual setup and need a more portable and adjustable solution than just my dimmable LED desk lamp.

  22. I uploaded my first video it's not much and isn't long either, but i was really glad i made the first move. I'm debating whether or not to take it down and make another one. But i have you to thank for giving me the strength and courage to begin loading. Thank you

  23. So I’m 99% sure I have this same exact light and on my last video it seems lit like wash me out and make my face look super super white. Do you know why this is happening or how I can help fix this issue?

  24. I have a question. I am a twitch streamer and my room changes colour. What I need is a light that will stop say a harsh red from also making me red. Is this what I am after and also is it not a problem having the white ring in your eye cause its something I focus on straight away.

  25. Just using 40w syska led bulb and an led panel. Planning to upgrade soon. Thanks for introducing me to this. I shoot all my videos indoor and at a distance of around 3-4 feet from subject. Would ring light be good for me?

  26. Great Review!
    I just ordered mine.
?It was as $100 more in ?? even after $ exchange rate.
It better be good on my mug or us Canuks are coming for you eh!
    Jk ?

PS love your content. It has really helped my Channel! Don’t look tho!!! LOL I’m still playing ?
    Happy Holidays ?

  27. Hi there! What is the cell phone mount that you use in this video? (or another one you recommend that is compatible with this ring light?). Thanks!

  28. Would this be too bright for hrs of Twitch streaming? Im in a small room and it would be probably 2 feet in front of me. Looking at these rings. Maybe a 10-14 inch even.

  29. Thanks for the info! I found it helpful. I'm just starting my YouTube channel on painting with acrylics and I am in the market for some good lighting.

  30. Hello – I'm quite new to doing videos and have a really small room where I do them, so don't have space for backlighting – so my question is – is a ring light like this enough for me to do a talk to camera piece for my video's? Thanks so much xx

  31. Hi, I have a ring light and want to add some light to the "studio" background (on a real budget) and space to shoot in is limited. Do you have any advice for kind of light (hardware store or amazon) lumens, bulb type, watts, color etc? Many thanks for any quick advice!

  32. Thanks for the orientation. Most of my video conference calls are from a work station. What would be the best placement for a 22" monitor on a workstation?

  33. The biggest negative side effect of ring lighting is the eyeball reflection of the light; giving the actor the ALIEN from another planet look..

  34. It looks good with ur eye color… but asian black eye color will not look good with ring ciircle reflection.

  35. Great video and it will surely help me in making my youtube videos in good quality. Thanks for sharing such useful information.

Having said that, Think Media, I have started my own channel related to Web Design, Web Development, SEO and Making Money Online. I am going to upload very cool stuff and need my channel to promote education for technology.

I have very few subscribers right now, I want more people to get benefit from my content. Any suggestions would be appreciable as I am new on youtube. As you have a lot of subscribers and viewers, I would be really thankful if you do a little shoutout and give feedback on improving my channel to convey better.

  36. I have an iPhone 8 Plus. How would I plug it in if it don’t have a regular earphone plug? Would I have to get the adapter ?

  37. MAJOR DOWNSIDE: You get weird white circles around your pupils. Makes people look freaky. Any way to diffuse it more or something so this doesn't happen?

  38. Thank you very much for this video! I have already followed all of your steps!! I feel good about your plan!!!!

  39. Does this need to be plugged in to be used? I am in need of a ring light, but it would be taken on the road quite a bit and would be shooting at farms and outdoors where there wouldn't be a plug available.
